Hi just worndering what kind of treats everyone uses when showing i used to use home made liver cake when showing my bitch but she seems to have gone off it . Any idears welcome

I have heard of liver cake being made with smelly fish - mackerel etc, but I haven't tried it because I don't think I could bear the smell as it cooked lol

try the livaloaf recipe, leave out liver and add tuna, mine love it.

Henry always loved his tuna cake! I've also used liver cake, hot dog sausage, cheese, chicken.....

I   like to use treats that I like.!.The reason being  that most dogs will show well if you put the treat in your own mouth and pretend to eat it...
Have seen people doing this with dog biscuits and liver cake.!!!!

i use chesse,bacon or small puppy treats ,also just tried new royal canin treats

We were given a free sample of the Royal Canin treats but my lot wouldn't eat them.!!!

substiture liver for one tin of tuna, I use stuff in sunflower oil.

Beef Jerky. Its clean, no hassle having to make it but smells good to the dogs and they love it.

tadog do you put the oil in as well or drain the tuna

I put in about half of the oil, sometimes i add yogurt as well, just guess still consistancy is how you would like it.

Cocktail sausages for mine when I'm in a rush - just the right size and don't crumble and leave a trail around the ring...

I have cut down on liver cake, I give the poor guys bits of roast chicken now :)

My bait bag is full of all sorts, just incase someone decides they don't like something!

Liver - (Asbo's favourite)
Sweedish Meatballs - (Razzle loves them)
Kidney
Mattesons smoked or garlic sausage
Cheese - They especially like the M&S Bavarian smoked cheese (but they only get that when my other half buys it ha ha)
Chicken fridge raiders (all though I usually end up eating them!)
I also have been know to bait Asbo on a sausage roll lol :)

Blimey Gemma - even I'd work pretty hard for those treats.    I'm liking the idea of smoked cheese to motivate me!!

Just wondered as I do use food treats occasionally but it is more about reinforcement than use all the time.

I would rather it become a behaviour that is done because they have learned and get praise rewards rather than food as it makes them less expectant of food all the time as labs are renowned to be piggies :-)

Sorry edited to say just reread and it is for treats when showing but isn't it the same principle ? If they enjoy doing it ok after you have finished as treat would be ok but during isn't it about the focus of the handler with the dog ?

slight deviation from topic here - I watched someone baiting their reluctant (table) dog recently.  She popped a piece of sausage into her mouth whilst stacking her dog, who watched her intently and showed on the table impeccably.  She got the treat as she got off the table - from the owners mouth!  Disclaimer: would only work with human tasty food!!!!

Sorry to hijack the thread but our breed isn't usually baited, and I've only ever seen it done from a bumbag or pocket - this was a novelty for me!  It worked - she got BOB!

That was the point that I was making, use a treat that YOU can eat. Several people in y breed do this very successfully.

Think i have found something that works markel prawns or cray fish well i think any kind of fish would work but im going to try  making it in too a cake like liver cake of someting because i think its too rich and oily on it own so if your standing next to someone in the ring that smells fishy its probely me lol

LOL I was watching a video of a very well known breeder and expert handler--he baits his dog so smoothly you'd almost not notice. I eventually concluded he must have the bait in his mouth but thought I must be going mad :)
