my girl dog china is pregnant and i calculate her to be due soon (although it could be a lot earlier but not later). i have noticed she is losing a clearish discharge which seemed to be quite heavy two days ago and continues at present.
Is this normal? i did not notice this when she had her last pup (singleton). also because her last pregnancy resulted in just one large puppy whom all the vets swore was the result of the dog next door, a HUGE collie cross!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it wasnt but i was a nervous wreck thinking about it as my boyfiend swore he had kept my two shih Tzus seperated when i was away but obviously he hadnt!
back to the point......will she have to have a ceaserean again if there is more than one pup or will she be able to whelp herself this time.?
also do you think i should get the vet to examine her to see if they know how many pups are in there?

My book says that they lose clear discharge a couple of days before due but i never noticed mine - my litter is 3 weeks old now - but my bitch was cleaning herself which is why i didnt see...

when was her last pregnancy??? this may have bearing on whether she may need another... So was this litter planned this time??? Usually first litters are only 1 or 2 and increase in 2nd litter so you could have as many as 4...

Yes get your vet to check her - my vet said phantom pregnancy but 2 weeks later we got 2 girls but you need to worm her anyway now so whilst ur at the vets getting wormer you might as well get her checked as well... it's only £20 anyway for wormer and check up!!!

good luck :-)

her last pregnancy was a year ago ......it wasnt planned unfortunately but the children unwittingly let her out the back with my other dogs and by the time i realised they were tied and i was having a nervous breakdown.
i dont know what pup weighed when born all i know is that it was too much...........the vets swore it was the result of the dog next door and i had some people who wanted to buy her but i couldnt let her go as i didnt know if she was gonna turn into some kinda monsta furry thing with long legs and a pointed nose! so i waited and waited and then at a couple of months decided yep she was definatly a shih tzu alright.
i think it may be that dad weighs twice as much as mam and is quite sturdy compared.
i will take her to the vet tomorrow, do you know what flea treatment is safe to use..they were front lined last month but she is scratching like a mad thing and pulling her hair out which is driving us both mad.
obviuosly i can treat both my other dogs but it says on the pack that it may pass on to pups or somat so i dont want to damage them in any way

How much did ur last pup weigh by the way? ;-) mine weighed 8 1/2 and 10 oz and i thought they were big... they are now huge which is worrying me too ;-) lol

Although I'm not a breeder, I do remember hearing somewhere that a singleton pup sometimes doesn't stimulate enough hormone to contract the womb, which is why singletons are often c section.....

she didnt seem to be able to push pup out at all and when the vet examined her she said she just didnt have the push to do it..obviously after the ceasarean they realised that pup wouldnt have fit through anyhow
she jumped on me and was pushing the bag out but then after 1/2 hour was no further along so i ran across to the vet (situated opposite fortunately!) and she said leave her an hour which i did then took her across...i was in the vets another hour with the vet with no joy so i was told to drive her to the main surgery
3 hours later they delivered miricle pup!

DONT treat your bitch for fleas until you consult the vets!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not going to be rude as I am really interested in following how you get on as I am a first time shih tzu breeder although my parents and in laws are experienced and professional breeders... I do advise that you weigh these pups that arrive daily... I just use kitchen scales although at week three they are quickly growing out of them...

Alot of people on the msg board are professional breeders or at least have lots and lots or experience and have done their research and come here for reassurance more than anything, I may be wrong or maybe its just the way you put things but you seem quite inexperienced yourself and to be honest sometimes people can be really rude and unkind - sometimes with reason sometimes not... but just be prepared for criticism - I was when I first posted but everyone has been helpful...
How long was she pushing for in total before you raced over to the vets??
So can i ask why you have decided to breed her again?

thank you emily for your kind help.....yes i am inexperienced in breeding dogs so would like help in anyway possible which is why i came to this board for help.
i am sure you have been nervous in breeding your dogs also but have obviously chosen to do so as it seems to run in your blood!
i didnt chose to mate china again as you have seen in my post, it just seems her and my other dog are destined to be together. the first time my boyfriend swore to me they had been kept seperate whilst i was away for a weekend in cornwall and the second the kids unwillingly let the two together. unfortunately the way my house is situated makes it impossible for the dogs/children not to cross paths at some point.
i have come onto the board to ask advice to save my vet the harrasment she normally encounters which is why i asked about flea treatments etc as i know that the front line cannot be used. i wondered if anything safe is available as i hate to think of her scratching!
she seems to be quite content at the minute but her belly looks twice the size of yesterday! i have been giving her chicken and rice and i have got her some lactose? as she enjoyed this before when she had her other pup!
thanks!
the discharge is still their but its not green or anything so i think its normal

hi there

what colours are ur shih tzu's??? hows the scratching goin??? I've never had a prob with fleas at all, i guess the prob is once they get them they get in ur grass in the garden etc to its hard... my aunty has a real prob with their cav's but I've never had a single flea in 8 years - must just be luck!!

so when is she due then - any ideas???

hi emily
my boy is grey and white and my girl china is gold with a black mask and their first pup is also gold with a black mask.
im gonna ask the vet tomorrow about flea stuff.where they come from i dont know as they dont mix with other animals so it may be in the park where i walk them. i dont at the minute as there is a phantom poisoner on the loose!!! it could only happen in devon! i got to take them in the car out of the neighbourhood instead
i dont think its long now for her to give birth, alls still wiggly inside and she keeps lying on me flat on her back so i can stroke her tummy, i think shes showing off
she has segregated herself totally from the other two and seems happiest with me in the front room, i tried putting her in my room but she seemed a bit annoyed so ill try again later as i want her next to me.
last time she jumped on my knee and then pushed the water bag out but she just didnt seem to be able to present pup at all.no wonder! i have got new scales to weigh pup as vet did it all last time and as i live opposite it meant i could just pop in and out
ill keep u posted as to how she is
i cant sleep now nevermind when it actually happens!

Yep the more pups the more hormones = stonger contractions - thats the theory!

Hi, One sign of pregnancy can be a clear sticky discharge from about 3-4 weeks after mating. My bitch had this with her first litter, she has now been mated again, but so far I have seen none of this discharge, but have been advised that sometimes you see it but not always.
