Topic Dog Boards / Health / Pro-kolin?
- By ashlee [gb] Date 01.11.11 20:23 UTC
Has anyone used this product? my peggy had an upset stomach, which was on and off,we thought she had picked up something or got at the bin but it went on too long,so trip to the vets.
Our vet told us it was proabably due to the long term steroids as it can damage her stomach and cause colitis.
Steroids saved my girl and  she has taken them for about 4 years,we are on the lowest dose possible, mostly going 4 days between tablets.
Vet gave metronidazole and pro-kolin,I stopped the antibiotics as peg stopped eating and she wasn't eating that much to start with, last few days all fine peggy now going mad for food and in general back to her normal demanding self,I am wondering if I should continue using pro-kolin,because to be honest I dont actually know if it worked?
Has anyone given this to thier dogs long term?
If peg is going to get bouts of inflammation I wonder if this stuff might prevent it.

I buy it on Amazon ( best value), arrives withing 2-3 days and am never without one in the house to use as first aid.

I always have a stock of it in, especially when a litter of pups on the ground.  Usually given if pups have slightly upset tums or loose.

It is a pre & pro-biotic, safe and cannot be overdosed.

Not sure about long term use as it usually works within 24hrs.. but certainly would be a usefull addition to the medicine box

thanks, thats great,I really needed to hear it from people who have actually used it,I felt sure it was the antibiotics that weren't helping,I will make sure that I always have some in the house.

I think that you can give Pro Kolin long term. I think that some dogs have a bad reaction to Metranidazole. I know that my Scarlet reacts badly to it and becomes very down. My vet has suggested that it makes her feel sick, which may explain the symptoms you have been seeing. Scarlet was prescribed this for Colitis and now takes sulfasaladine with out side effects.

Ilearn something new every day on here.  I usually buy it from online vet places and put in a big order to justify the high P&P.  Off to look on amazon for a cheap supply.  thanks tooolz

Is it the paste or sachets that people buy of this stuff? I have a probiotic but am tempted to buy Pro kolin as part of my kit! Not sure what to buy though!

I have always used the paste, easy to measure and very palatable

Thanks Kay - they seem to come in various sizes...15ml...30ml....The larger, the cheaper. Have you any idea how long they keep once opened? Say I administer three doses from the 30ml syringe I would still have 15ml left. Does this need to be disposed of or does it keep for a length of time?

I have always kept my open tubes in the fridge, I think the last open one I threw away was around 6months old, didnt want to take chances, but if you are using it on a regular basis.. say every few weeks, you should be fine with refridgeration.

I use the tube too, I just screw the measuring collar thing down to where I want it and the dogs lick the prokolin off the end straight out the tube - easy peasey and works quickly every time. The tube I have in the fridge now was probably opened about a year ago, maybe more.

Thanks guys :) Definitely seems a worthwhile addition to any doggy kit :)

I use the paste as well colliecrew.  Like the others I keep it in the fridge and give them a squirt in the chops when there are upset stomachs.  It keeps for ages.

I must be a cheapskate but our first aid contains paediatric kaolin and morphine or just kaolin, works a treat and has been given the OK by their vet.

I buy the largest for better value, and like the others, keep it in the fridge.  I have recently used a new one, after finishing the one in the fridge.  It was definitely at least 6 months old, and it had not gone off.  The smell was exactly as normal.

Lacy do they spit it out?  I know as a kid I hated the taste.  Do you syringe it down them?
- By chaumsong Date 03.11.11 01:14 UTC
I remember squirting kaolin and morphine down the dogs throats after a battle to pin them in the corner, then ending up with most of it all over me...lol  I find prokolin much more relaxing as even my picky eater likes the taste and will lick it from the syringe :-)
- By Lacy Date 03.11.11 08:22 UTC
Jean. No,  can syringe it but only because of the mess - they lap it off either the syringe end or a spoon - If any is drooled or ends up on the floor the other licks, cleans up! Knowing what they attempt to eat when out, can't see that kalolin would be a problem?

It's brilliant stuff, it's always instantly cleared up any diarrhoea/looseness/mucous my sensitive tum Spinone has had (if it's bad I give him 5ml twice a day for 2 or 3 days, can be squirted onto meals too).  Good idea re keeping in the frig, cheers!  Not cheap tho at about £8/30ml + about £3.50 p & p
