- By Lea Date 22.10.11 22:44 UTC
Mark, is there anyway we can add a like button on this forum????
Probably not as only ever seen it on FB but if there is, can we????
I will also cc PM Mark as well with this.
Probably a no go but would be good to be able to, and will cut out what is not liked, the posts that say here her :) :) :)

And a 'dislike' one....

To take your suggestion at face value someone clicking a like button does not really add to the information on a thread and I fear most threads would stop after a few posts and the information and opinion would be taken over by clicks on the like button. At the moment we do have a few posts that just affirm what has been said but to have more would total change this from a forum to a social networking site.

I have mentioned before that a thanks button would be useful and would still keep it as a forum.  There are times when the forum has erupted in negativity because people have fundamentally disagreed with the views of others but threads with lots of 'me too' posts are a pain to read and means the useful bits of info get hidden between the 'me too's'.

A thanks button would help newbies sort the wheat from the chaff e.g. health test your dog before considering breeding = lots of thanks/likes  e-collars as a training method = no thanks/likes.

There are lots of forums that do this and it doesn't hamper the flow of the discussion and there are many times on here that I have agreed with what people have said but haven't posted as I don't have anything additional to add.

I vote for a like or thanks button for useful posts.

Thats the thing, it wont stop people agreeing with others and adding useful bits to threads the way us lot talk,
But it will stop the me toos :)

Well, here is another 'me too' post for you!!!  :)  :)
- By Nova Date 23.10.11 10:11 UTC
Sorry, can't agree, what is wrong in actually saying thank you and giving an up date - and if you agree say so and why.

Would hate this to become another FB with no one actually adding anything to the first post and the first posts becoming statements or announcements and nothing more.

I don't mind the 'me too' posts although in most cases people write comments as well which as Nova also points out are more informative and useful to a debate.

I'd much rather read why a poster likes a previous comment rather than just being able to count those that do

Yes, I would prefer to know that people have really considered what they are agreeing to rather than just nodding for a mate for instance :)

I am looking from my point of view. I agree with alot of things, but have not the knowledge to add anything else to a thread, or cannot add anything new,
I try not to add 'me too' comments but would click likes if I agreed with a comment.
I donnot type anything if I cannot add anything to a thread (apart from it being against TOS to add 'me too' posts!!!) but I will post a one sentance answer sometimes if I can add something, or a longer post xx

Is it?  I don't think I knew that.  I've seen a few lately ;)
- By Lea Date 23.10.11 21:20 UTC
Well, we get told off by mods for doing it as it doesnt add anything to the thread :)
Lea :) :)

I agree with you Lea and I think it would add another dimension. There have been times (last time was yesterday) when I have smiled or even laughed or punched the air at a post, but not had anything to add as the poster said it all. A Like button would have been perfect. There have even been times recently when some of us have added nothing but "Like" as a comment.

There are forum softwares that allow 'thanks' (some call it 'karma'), and then in a little strip under someones post it will say 'Theemx thanked you for this post' or if you have several people it lists the usernames, and once it gets to a certain point then it just says '37 people thanked you' etc.

Then in each persons profile you can see how many times overall they were thanked for their post, which gives you an idea as to how useful that persons replies tend to be (or how much they are liked, but this isnt really teh case in the places I have seen it used).

Whether THIS forum software allows it, or whether it would require a huge effort to build I have no idea at all, but in the places I have seen it used, it does NOT result in people NOT responding, its an additional thing, or used where people would have just said 'thanks' or as is done in a lot of places here, a quote of the post and 'like' underneath.

I have used the 'like' button on social networking sites.A quick and easy way to agree.
However on the flip side - if I have made a comment and someone has 'liked' my comment/post part of me wants to know 'why have they liked it?'Todays society is often lived in the fast lane - a quick text to a friend/parent were by before FB and texting it would have been done verbally and perhaps had more meaning.
Maybe I am missing the point, but if you have nothing to say but like a post - surely you had something to say in the first place.
