continued from here
Sheena lost her pups. She had a section last night and both pups were born dead. The vet said they had been dead over 12 hours. So although I'm feeling guilty as hell the vet said there was no way I could have known.
Now I'm left 3 heartbroken kids a poor dog who hasn't got a clue what as happened.
I don't wish to upset anyone awaiting a litter, but do prepared it doesn't always turn out as planned.

Oh Sharon, what a terrible thing to happen.Poor Sheena must be sore and wondering whats happened, but i'm so glad that she's come through. You're right though, nothing is certain, and its so hard explaining to the children. Give Sheena a big hug....and one for you too, 'cos its hard to keep everything "afloat" sometimes

Sharon, so sorry for you and the family, the same has just happened to my friend, her bitch welped 1 puppy,(dead) no signs of contractons, so 2hours later took her to the vet, has had a ceaser only 1 live puppy, but thats not all, about 6 weeks ago her other bitch welped a litter easily, everything .o.k. got up next morning to find her bitch lying dead, she hand reared the pups for 2 weeks then watched as they died one by one, vet could not find anything wrong. So for anyone thinking of breeding, please be aware that these things do happen. This is the first ceaser my friend has had in about 15 years of breeding, and also the first bitch that she has lost after welping, so never take anything for granted.

I'm so sorry Sharon. Problems can occur at any time and it is such a relief for you to still have your dog, you could so easily have lost her.

Hi John, thanks for thinking about me, i am doing ok. Scared for cleo, doesnt help when i am still a no smoker (you got this taylor). I just hope none die like befor, too upseting for us.
With candy going John I had mixed feelings about it, i know she is happy and that sharon is a great person, just still feel sad about it.
Apart from that we are all fine, cleo fat, and bud as clingy as cleo, both dogs indoors (they have turned soft) likes the radiator now, where as bud would never come in.
speak soon Debbie x

Try not to worry Debbie, you can only do your best. With Candy, you did the right thing by her however hard it may be to you. Just remember that and it won't seem so bad.
Best wishes, John

In my last reply I said that fluid was normal if the dog was in labor and passing puppies. But if the dog is passing that black fluid and not in labor that means the sack around the puppy has broken that means the puppy will die. That is how i know from the experience of my rottweiler passing the same fluid. She did't go into labor on time. I had to take her to the vet to get a shot of pitocion to induce labor to pass the puppy.

So sorry to hear about your poor girl. Please give her a hug from us and have one yourself. I really don't think that there is a sadder state than a bitch who has gone through pregnancy and surgery and have nothing to love at the end.
I had this happen to a bitch of mine some years ago. Cavaliers (or certainly mine) generally begin to whelp at about 60 days and if they go to 63 or more, I begin to worry and in these cases usually something is wrong. Frizzy obviously did not have a large litter and so I did wonder if the babies were just comfortable and taking their time. On day 60 I had her checked by the vet, who did a scan (for his own peace of mind) and declared that there was just one puppy and not to worry. He said that if nothing had happened by day 63 to go back. She wasn't herself the following morning, didn't eat or drink, by the following morning I had decided that if nothing happened by lunchtime, I would go back and request a section. At lunchtime she went for a wee and passed masses of black gunge. The vet took one look and said he would open her. Result one very dead and decomposed puppy and one live (just) almost white tiny puppy (Frizzy is a heavily marked tri colour) - puppy died within half an hour and I almost lost Frizzy. She was rested for almost two years and then mated again, this time she produced on her own one dog puppy and by section one beautiful little tri colour girl. My thoughts are to go by your own gut feelings, after all most of us do know our own girls and can recognise when things are not right.
I do wonder though how it seems to work that the 'puppy farmers' and the like manage to get large litters for very little veterinary cost and those of us who take time to plan our breeding programmes, care deeply for our bitches and feed correctly, end up with costs for sections and often lose whole litters. Whoever it was who coined the phrase that breeding dogs makes mega bucks - did not use me as a reference. After 20 years and some 12 litters, I still have to see a profit.

Yes Alice it does make you sick doesn't it. I know of 2 different people who have had litters of pups just for the money. 1 of them had a healthy litter of 13 and the other a healthy litter of 9. They didn't give their dogs the same care mine had.
They didn't care too much for their pets, I aive mine all I can. But thats how things go.
1 of Sheenas pups was very very dead, thin missing fur, it looked as though it had been dead a good while longer than the other.
I thought if I'd got her to the vets earlier the other pup may have lived. But having heared what you went through I think that must have been harder for you, the pup and the mother.
And yes I agree with our own gut feeling. I took advice from someone who had been breeding for 25 years. Someone I trusted, greatest regret of my life.
