Topic Other Boards / Foo / Am I stupid??? Car insurance moan!

Purely rhetorical question - no answer required!

Parked car in town.  Return to note on windscreen re scratch on front wing.
Followed this up with telephone call.  No question over liability.

Ask insurance company for advice.  Informed they will handle it and to 'speak to no other insurance company about this'.
Politely declined to speak with other party's insurer when they rang me.

Garage contact me and arrange repair.
Garage contact me and inform car repaired and I owe them excess on my car insurance.

Advised by insurance company this is the case and given the news it will take a minimum of 4 weeks for them to recover my costs.

What I don't get is....if this accident was clearly not my fault, why am I expected to stump up cash to get it fixed?  And if I'd let the other party's insurers deal with it....I guess I'd not be forking out my excess?????

I feel deceived by my insurance company.

Yeah..............I'm stupid! :-(

It's normal practice with car insurance - not that I agree with it but it is how it works.

My car was almost written off when it was parked - other driver admitted liability and it was repaired through claiming on other driver's insurance. The excess from my own policy was deducted and I then had to claim it back separately. I can't understand why either but am informed it is standard practice. Apparently the excess applies who so ever is at fault but it can be claimed back - eventually, after a lot of phone calls etc etc etc :-(

I guess you just have to count yourself really, really lucky that the other driver owned up and you will get it back eventually.

I remember reading of a note which said.
All the people who are around and saw me hit your car think that I am now giving you my contact details - sorry but they are wrong !!

a car reversed into my parked car messing up the bumper. took 2 or 3 months (the dead line for the other insurance company to admit liability before my insurance company would take them to court) where I drove around with my bumper a mess as I couldnt afford to pay my excess. Once the other insurance company admitted liability on the womens behalf I got my car done and didnt have to pay the excess.
It was different when a bus hit my parked car. I had to pay the excess then they claimed it back off the bus insurance company and they sent me a cheque for it!!!!

Just had exactly this too. Funny I think ins companies have changed the policy because I know in the past I have not had to pay up if it was not my fault.

I had a car driving to the back of me in February...
Claimed through their insurance and did not have to pay anything.
Seems it maybe depends on the company?
He was insured with Tesco...

If you are going to be hit by a car, make sure it's a motabilty car, I was a couple of years ago and they sorted everything4
including a hire car, never even had to report it to my insurers as they dealt with that too :o)
