hi just wondering if you can still ride a horse and show  a gundog  dog after having hip op,i have hip dysplsa had my hip operted on as child and also 2 failed back op,i am going to see hip specilist about my hip as it very painful now i was told by one of my back consultants i would need new hip by fourty ,am worried incase i can not ride and show my pointer once i have new hip

Well I know someone who is 85, and after her hip replacement, she still rides daily and walks her dogs!

I would think it will all depend how you feel and advice from your specialist ? regards the showing the pointer, i'm sure if you could stack him someone would move him for you?

My auntie had her hip replaced 5 weeks ago. She returns to work in a few weeks and has been told she can do everything as normal but has to be careful if she does anything that requires bending and twisting at the same time as this can cause damage to the hip & in some cases make the joint 'pop' out. As riding isnt a bending/twisting at the same time motion i would imagine it would be fine (once everything is healed) although best to check with the specialist.

It depends on what operation they decide to do and how they do it as often there are precautions to follow for a period of time such as no lifting your hip above 90 degrees, No crossing your legs and no twisting.
Of course the aim of such an op would be to restore independence and function so I see no reason why you wouldn't be able to ride or show your dog once the initial precautionary period is over.

Can't comment on the riding, but I have a friend who shows a golden and she has had both hips replaced.

I can't move my girl in the show ring, but a friend moves her for me. People are really helpful and there is always someone who offers. I was quite amused when at one show a lady who must have been well over 80 came over and said "hello my dear, do you have a runner or would you like me to run for you". It quite tickled me.

thanks everyone,just hope it works i do have have probs showing hector due to pain but i am determand,i can barly get up on apollo hes 18.2hds we have very high mounting block i can only mange 20min in walk my hubby has to lift me off i have wonderful girl ridding and looking after apollo she loves him and spoils him rotten,
i am 33yr and feel 66yr at times ,i have enterd waverly gundog show in few weeks enterd 5 classes by end of show i will be hardly able to walk am on co codmal ,tramdol and cream for my back,also had c section 14mnths ago ill keep battling on

A friend rides after a double hip replacement her doctor told her to 'avoid falling off' as it could cause a dislocation.  She sold feisty over-sized TB X WB and bought a slightly more sensible 15.2hh TB x Cob. She didn't start riding fully until a year after - its now 3 years and she is back doing everything - hacking, beach gallops, small XC fences....

Someone may run your dog for you at shows i've attended someone has stood their dog and a friend or another exhibitor as trotted their dog up and down for them
