Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Phantom pregnancy aggression??
- By Rottie-lover [gb] Date 14.10.11 07:50 UTC
Hello it's my first time on here and I just wondered if someone can help, my rot tie bitch had her first season 8-9 weeks ago and was aggressive towards my small border collie bitch. Now my rottie is going through a phantom pregnancy and has hurt my collie again!
I know I can't get her spade until she has done with this, but is there anything else I can do? She's producing milk, and whining constantly, I'm having to keep them separate as I can't carry on like this! Has anyone else experienced anything like this??
Thankyou!!

You need to keep your Rottie occupied so she doesn't dwell on the phantom, remove any toys she may be using as "pups", increase her exercise and don't make a big fuss of her as this may make things worse. Don't be tempted to express any milk because that will make her produce more.

I have a bitch who has phantoms but she has never got nasty with the others, all I can suggest is keep them seperated unless they are being supervised closely.

Hopefully everything will return to normal soon.

Sorry but you're doing all you can at the moment - her hormones are clearly not agreeing with her and the only thing you can do is keep them separate, as you would if she'd really had pups.  Unfortunately there's no magic wand, she has to go through it and then things should settle down.  Hope it works out for you.

We have a girl who gets really bad phantoms and has a lot of milk. Our Vet gave herGalastop whic dried up the milk and she soon went back to her old self.

Thankyou everyone!! She doesn't seem as bad today. She still has milk but she's not feeling as sorry for herself as she was! Is this normal behaviour in a phantom with the aggression? Because they usually get on so well. But she's fine with my older rottie bitch she's never shown aggression towards her, I'm not sure if it's coz rio ( my eldest) has been spayed or just that she doesn't see her as a threat! But thankyou for your help! Just hope it passes soon!

Vet, galastop and then spay before it gets really out of hand between the dogsor worse still you get a case of redirected aggression to you. She can't handle her hormones so don't subject her to them.

She hasn't shown any aggression towards me, and I will get her spayed as soon as she has finished with this phantom and returns to normal as there is nothing I can do while she is still like this.

And I'm not subjecting her to anything, I was planning on spaying anyway but she started with this. It's not my fault shes like she is

My bitch is also going through a phantom and she can't be bothered with the rest of the pack at the min.  She really thinks she's PG so is just alienating herself from the other dogs.  She is also producing milk.  What I have done over the last week is up the exercise, cut her food back to very little(and I mean like 2 biscuits!!) and remove anything that could be 'nursed'.  Seems to be working as she is playing a little again and her teats don't look so 'full'.
I will be getting her spayed as this gets worse with each season and I don't want her to have to go through this again!
Your rottie will calm down again with her hormones but I would keep her separate for the time being.  Cut her food and up the exercise and it won't be too long.  Galstop is also good if it's lasting a while.

She's playing today and iv let her back in with the others only when I'm in! She isn't staying in just one place like she was and she has stopped licking herself! So hoping that she's getting back to her usual self. She still doesn't seem too happy about my collie being around tho which is worrying me a little! I really can't wait to get her spayed!

Just to ask as iv never had this in any of my dogs before! Will it get worse as her seasons go on then? X

Get the training started.  Work through an obedience routine with her or something to get her mind active and busy.  Reason I say this is the spaying is not a magic wand.  Feelings that build up, will still be there after the op and even the hormones take a good 6-8 months to work out of the body.  I had 2 akitas that were the best of friends and then the younger one (at 18mths) had a season and it was all out war.  The 2 bitches would be fine for a while then a leaf would fly past and they would try to fight to the death over it.  I got both bitches spayed thinking this would sort it out.  It didn't.  The hatred was then to built up.  I was never able to have those 2 together again until the older ones teeth fell out at 14 and the younger one, who was then 12, had dementia and couldn't remember who she was!!  Get the training started and stop the rottie 'eyeballing' the collie.  This behaviour should not be allowed at all.  Get in charge of your pack before the rottie takes over.

Usually, once a bitch has a phantom, she will have one after every season.  You should get them spayed as you wouldn't let your bitch have a litter everytime would you?  The phantom increases the chances of pyo and cancers of the womb and mammorys and runs the dogs immune system down.  I certainly won't be letting mine have another as she has had 2 litters and now this phantom.  I don't usually spay my bitches but I will be this time.

No I certainly wouldn't! I will be getting her spayed as soon as this is over with, I wouldn't mind but she has just completed her bronze citizenship award!! These two usually get on really wellnthey are inseparable! But she doesn't have a problem with my older rott who has been spayed, I don't know if it's because she doesn't see her as a threat or what it is! X

Just to add, she does do as she's told, and when I catch her "eyeballing" my collie I tell her and she slyly walks away! But yesterday they were playing together and doing great but since she had hold of her the other day I won't trust her alone with her until she's fully overcome this and gets back to her usual silly self!!
