Topic Dog Boards / General / Tesco insurance price hike :( :(
- By Lea Date 15.10.11 08:47 UTC
Just got my renewal for Ebba, my Rottweiler, 7 years 1 month.
Not onlyt has it been changed to Royal and sun alliance,
But the premium has gone from £19/ month to £38 :o :o :o :o
She does have HD but in the last year I have not claimed anything :( :( :(
I am not happy :( :( :(
Why are insurance companys hiking the price so much :( :( :(
Lea :(

>Why are insurance companys hiking the price so much

Because they have to cover the costs of all the claims from other people. It's the same for all insurance, whether car insurance, buildings insurance - all claims are paid for by everyone's premiums, whether or not they've made a claim themselves.

The cost of the insurance payouts for the riots, for example, has to be covered somehow ...

So many people have insurance now and are claiming regularly that they need to hike the premiums in order to carry on making a profit. It seems all the companies are doing this now.

Could also be because she has turned 7 now as well and is perceived as being at greater risk.

Royal Sunalliance pet insurance is expensive.
One of mine is 50p shy of £170 a month with them, another £50 a month.
They do raise their insurances significantly once the animal reaches 6-7 years old.
and the % of increase is quite frightening...as you can see.

Boxacrazy,
£170/ month and £50:o :o :o :o :o :o do you really pay that???? surely you dont spend more than £200 on veternary care per month???
Lea :)

We're with M&S which is also underwritten by Royal Sun Alliance and the prices have hiked quite significantly in the last couple of years.

Lola now costs £81 per month.  Sounds like a lot until you calculate her annual vet bill.  We claim much, much more than that for her acupuncture, hydrotherapy, anti-inflammatories, joint supplements etc plus any other non-routine stuff that crops up.

Royal Sun Alliance base their premiums on breed profiling.  The breeds that generally have the most health problems and incurr the biggest vet bills therefore cost more to insure.

Also, the availability of expensive tests and advancements in veterinary medecine means that more and more people choose to accept tests and treatments for conditions that would have been treated more conservatively (and cheaply) in the past.

The problem is Lea if you move insurers now nobody else will cover any costs relating to the HD as it's an existing condition :-(
- By Boxacrazy [gb] Date 15.10.11 15:05 UTC
Yes I do REALLY pay that for insurance premiums...for just two dogs of my dogs.
I have another 3 dogs that I don't insure at the moment..but have on my on vet's
practise plan..where I get a percentage off a vet bill.

Boxacrazy I'm just curious, is your dog likely to need more than £2000 a year in vet bills?
- By Boxacrazy [gb] Date 15.10.11 17:01 UTC
Depends this year we have :(
Not too lucky at moment with vet bills - sigh - even one of the vets commented
that I should have a wing named after me :(
- By tadog [gb] Date 15.10.11 17:29 UTC
up until recently i had 5dogs insured and paid almost £160-00 a month. but for two dogs that is expensive

Lea, I switched my rott last year to axa as it was coming so much cheaper than the others.  He was with M&S which is underwritten by royal sun alliance.  My premium renewal came through from M&S this month at £37 which had gone up another £10pcm and like your Ebba, Missy is getting into the old dog insurance category (8 and a half).

When I phoned to cancel and told the person I was going to go with AXA at £16 a month he told me that it was only an introductory price they were giving me and it would go up by 10% or 20% next year.  He didn't have a response when I told him that AXA could increase their premiums by nearly 150% and still be competitive with what M&S are now offering.

Gone are the days of no excess and cheap premiums.

My 2 cats were insured with tesco until i received my renewal notice last month. I immediately changed for the same reason! I choose to have a pretty basic cover for my pussy cats and halved the premium with comparable cover from argos. Because of your girl's age you may not be able to match your previous premium but do get some alternative quotes as you may be surprised.

Well I'm with tesco and the renewal is due in December-not looking forward to that now :(  George is £27 a month already so if it doubles eek! It started off at £17 so in four years the increase hasn't been too bad really compared to some. Let's hope this one isn't a huge increase.
I daren't swap insurers as one vet said he had a heart murmur even though it's never been reported again so I'm sure this would now be treated as a pre-existing condition (even though at the moment he doesn't have it!)

I've just totted up my bills that I can find for the last insurance year...
Spent £2130.21 in vets bills on the dog whose insurance has increased to £2034 a year from November of this year.
The insurance was £1451.88 for the year that covered the £2130.21 of vet bills.

So as you can see - yes it's entirely possible to go over the insurance cost so I'm only 20% out of pocket rather
than 100% out of pocket had I not insured the dog.
This year I was better off insuring the dog...as I had £678.33 more costs than it cost to insure.

Oh and going through my paperwork it seems that I have got my other dogs premium wrong too...
It's actually costing £84.59  a month to insure and not the £50 a month I thought - oops.
Although on this policy the insurance company are winning as I have rarely had to claim....
So it's costing me £254.09 a month to insure two dogs with Royal Sunalliance.

Having Put in a new quote online and removing the 20% discount you would get as a new customer it looks like it's going to be around the £50 a month mark-sigh!! I just don't get how they can justify doubling the premiums like that. Not imPressed in the slightest. I will keep him insured though as a bad tum and a night in the vets last year cost nearly £350 and the year before he had an epulis removed, resulting in an overnight stay as they used acp on him so he wasn't wanting to drink as too groggy-again costing a few hundred pounds.
I know with George they paid out for his cruciates but that was years ago so shouldn't affect the next years premiums surely?!

My friend who has a 3 year old Malamute has had a shock with her insurance with NFU.Merlin has been unlucky in health, has had I believe 2 unrelated surgeries on his stomach and had issues with his back.Total paid out on their life policy so far is about £8000.However the price per month quoted for their renewal is,and you are not going to believe this is over £280 PER MONTH.She has questioned this thinking the decimal point was in the wrong place as did the customer service person when she telephoned. But no,when checked this was correct. She has put a complaint with the insurance ombudsman but this can take 8 weeks and the policy needs renewal in the next week or so.Unbelivable.
