Hello can anybody help please??
On Friday my 6 month old chiuahua male was sick 8 times on the carpet, on sat he had really bad runny poo, today (Sunday) we woke up and he was lying in his runny poo and sick all over the place. I wrapped him in a towel and rushed him to the vets. When we opened the towel blood was everywhere and had come from his bum. He has had both his jabs and info is below.
31/05/11 - EURICAN DHPPI and EURICAN L
28/06/11 - same as above.
The brand is MERIAL
The vets seems to think it could be the parviovirs?? Any help please

If your vet thinks it may be parvio they may well be right, did they keep him in. How old was he when he had his injections as it seems he may have been very young.

Anyway I am very sorry to hear you little boy is so ill and say he is now under the vet and that is the best you can do.

Sounds like haemmorraegic enteritis  , the vets may put him on a drip, they'll test for bacteria , and give antibiotics ...hope he is insured....hope he gets well soon. Avoid very doggy areas where you walk as he is so tiny and low to the ground...
There are different strains of parvo ...wait and see what the vet says....

Hi Jakie thanks for your reply, we seem to think he had his first jab around 11 weeks, just don't understand that's why we paid out money to stop this parvio. He was kept inside and anyway from any dogs.

Did wonder if it may have been younger than that and therefore thought that perhaps he was still carrying his dams immunity and the jabs had not taken, it seems though at 11 weeks it should have been fine.

It is natural to want to know everything you can but I think you are going to have to trust your vets and wait to see what the tests tell them, they will do their best for him that you can be sure of and once they know what is causing the problem they will be able to start treatment in the mean time I would think they will put him on a drip.

My Dobermann had suspected parvo at 5 1/2 months old. He survived but it was touch and go and he was on a drip for 5 days. He also had the puppy vaccinations but they are not full proof and sometimes do not take if the pup still has mum's antibodies. I don't have any studies or anything to back this up, but I was told that 2 out of 5 dogs that get parvo are vaccinated dogs....don't know how true that is.

Just had a phone call from the vets to say he's not got any better since we dropped him off this morning and she advised he may not make it thorogh the night :-(

Update his 10% better than yesterday, so could be on the up

Very pleased to hear it, the problem will pull the puppy down as it makes you feel awful - I've not had Parvo and your puppy may not but I have had  enteritis with high fever and you feel very poorly I can tell you - so no matter what has caused this the treatment will be the same, keep the fluid going in and the temperature down until the condition improves.

Everything still crossed for the little lad.

Good news is from the call to the vets last night he's getting better and is back on light food again.
The vet does seem to think it is the parviovirs that he's got. Anybody know if we will have to get him re- jabbed?? As it didn't work the ones he had first time.

So glad he's on the mend.

You should have a blood sample sent off for titre testing for the diseases the vaccines coveredto see if he needs jabing again.

It's a difficult one, as they may not have taken as his immune system was still too immature or mothers antibodies were still very strong and stopped them working. 

On the other hand some dogs just don't take the vaccine. 

Now that he has had it he will have antibodies for this one though.

I don't know how it works now but years ago my grandparents dobe pup recovered from parvo and had his jabs again , he nearly died but went on to live a long healthy life of 13 years.

Been checking for updates. So pleased to see he's on the mend :) xx

Thanks everybody charlie is home now back where he belongs. He's still not himself, so he's milking the cuddles lol. The vets are sorting out the test and even made contact with the jab brand for test too. Thanks everybody again for your support.
