I have JRT bitch who spends a lot of time whining. She starts the minute I get out of bed and will whine contstantly until I've walked them. Then when we come back she will start again until shes had breakfast.

She then usually settles down for a few hours if I don't leave any toys around and will then start again at around 4pm until they've been walked again and fed. If I leave any toys she will constanly leave them by my feet and whine waiting for me to throw them but I can't as I'm trying to work!

I am in a routine with walks and feeds but every now and again I might have to later my routine by an hour or so. I have tried ignoring her but she just gets louder so I end up telling her to shush which works for about two minutes!

Any ideas to shut her up!

How old is she?

You say she settles down for 'a few hours' between breakfast and 4pm - that's a full day in my reckoning! I need to take mine out again at lunchtime for a run and then something to eat - perhaps you need to break up their day as well, if you want them to wait till later in the evening?

She is seven and has always whinged!

They do get attention during the day and access to the back garden whenever they want it. She is slightly overweight so I have to make sure I don't over feed her.

Its more the morning whining that is annoying 6am even on a weekend. When I was single I would just get up and walk her but now I have a partner we would like to sleep past 6 on a Sunday Morning! Its not that she needs to go as she won't go out in the back garden.

I have one that will not toilet (though happy to wee) in the back garden unless she is bursting and will get very persistent on insisting on a walk if she needs to.

If you have over the years got her used to an early morning toilet walk she does actually need it.

You might try over a period of time taking her out 10 minutes later than the last time until the morning wee walk is at a more reasonable time.

Mine go to bed at 11pm or later and are happy until 8am.

Sometimes having quite set routines (which dogs like) means you make a rod for your own back I'm afraid.  It took me ages to get mien from a 7-7.30 am wake up routine which applied when the children were at home and was getting them up for school, to the current more leisurely mornings now they have left home.  Still have to get up before OH to start their day.

Animals (and babies and toddlers!) don't understand the concept of weekends, I'm afraid - to them all days are the same, and the same routine applies. We've managed to extend the night from a 5.30am wake-up to a 6am one (yes, Sundays too!) by gradually going down a couple of minutes later, and as the mornings are getting darker we hope to get to 6.30am before Christmas! However it does mean later late-night wees, at about 10.30 or 11pm, so no early nights.

I feel your pain, I have 2 whingers! My younger one is crated at night due to the weeing on the floor (even at 15 months!), and starts yapping from 6am to 6.30am, and continues until I go down. I know she generally does go out and wee once she's let out, but she's not desperate to go out, because when hubby is away they sleep on the bed with me, and we have no whinging at all even if I stay in bed until 7.30am! So she's basically whinging because she thinks it's time to get up and play. And my older girl whinges from around 5pm until we reach dinnertime which is and always has been around 6pm! She's also started whinging a bit after her walk, possibly thinking she ought to be allowed breakfast as I'm eating then! :-p

I have the same prob my 6month old whinges ALOT !! No set times for her whinging, no pattern to it, I think that with some dogs they are just like babies and trying to communicate with you about something eg im cold, im hot, im hungry, i cant get comfy, i can hear something strange, and the only way they no how is to 'cry' LOL
