Our local council are rolling out licences for home dog boarding and one rule is no puppies allowed under 6months with other dogs, this doesn't affect me as i'm too busy dog walking to branch into home boarding and apart from a possible health issue (puppies immune system maybe?) i'm not sure i get the reasoning i've just been discussing it with another dog walker who does home boarding and i don't get the rule.
Another rule is no licence will be granted if you have a resident child under 5yrs of age? yet a childminder can own dogs and do a risk assessment and notify Ofsted with no major issues? but yet this is concerning your own child not others?
Like i said this doesn't affect myself so i maybe me missing the obvious but it seems rather odd and do boarding kennels also have the same rulings?
Thanks!
When it comes to boarding kennels it seems that they will take a pup of any age as long as it is vaccinated, I know from a friend that a relative of hers put a 14 week pup in kennels for the weekend whilst they went to a wedding :-( So the 6 month rule doesn't apply in boarding kennels that I know of.
The child I can understand, as most rescues have an age limit of no less than 7yrs for re-homing dogs (I know some are more flexible on that) it is reasonable as not only could the home boarder be careless with a dog but not vigilant whilst a child is poking eyes or pulling tails, so for the sake of both a good idea, though I would have kept it at 7yrs myself if it is to be done, why drop to 5yrs?
I'm surprised that child minders can have dogs and young children, even though I've grown up surrounded by dogs I'd never have 100% faith in someone else protecting or supervising my child with a dog, I'm afraid I wouldn't use them.
Just my opinion on it, it's different when a dog is your own and the children are your own, I wouldn't risk with someone else's child and particularly if it were my 'business' and income, so I think they have it about right, though I'd have made it 7yrs. (So even worse :-D)
