Topic Dog Boards / General / Non-slip vinyl recommendations?
- By Trialist Date 09.10.11 17:28 UTC
I know good doggy flooring is a regular topic, and I have searched but not really found what I'm looking for.

I am currently on my 3rd day flat on my back - not said for sympathy, honest - so my thoughts have gone to flooring and other things.

I have a living room carpet which is well past it's sell by date & is totally impractical with a back door leading from it to garden. Whilst I'm unable to pick up poo in garden & get down to clean doggies feet I dread to think what is being walked in :-O.

Would appreciate any recommendations for non slip vinyl (makes etc) and even ones to totally avoid. All other floor surfaces have been discounted. Also whether glue on or sheet vinyl is best, or if no difference.

Having tried various floorings over many years, I've now got a ridged Karndean throughout my downstairs (rough ceramic tiles in the kitchen) and now wouldn't have anything else both for dogs and humans! :)

Ah yes that's good. Sadly discounted on cost basis :(

Hi - we have industrial rubber flooring downstairs and it has been brilliant ( although it sounds a bit grim it looks really good - to us anyway) It was laid 7 years ago and is still standing up to the daily abuse it is subjected too without looking worn . It wasn't cheap but I suspect it is more cost effective than tiles. Easy to keep clean .
Does need a 'treatment' every 3 years with one of those floor polish machines but it's easy to do yourself .
I would use it again in preference to tiles, carpet , wood although we have had all of these before.

That's interesting as I have looked at that, though did rule out due to cost. But I do like the idea for future use. Thanks.

Forgot to say that if you are a clumsy klutz like me it's great as it's quite difficult to break plates / mugs etc on it ( although it can be done !) Also nice to walk on in bare feet .

I've road tested my friends slate tiles for bounceability with glasses, plates, etc. They're ruled out!!

So what type have you got? Pressumably not the stuff with the nice raised circles (well, i like them) if you're using a machine to apply a civering every few years?

I have a similar 'hit' rate when exposed to tiled floors ...
We do in fact have the floor with the raised circles although from memory there were a huge number of options for colour, texture and pattern . I think the texture does not make a difference to the maintenance .
Not sure what makes you have looked at but we went with Dalsouple (hope it's ok to mention that here) based on an industrial builder friends advice .
- By Red dog [gb] Date 09.10.11 20:58 UTC
Just had a quick look online and annoyingly Dalsouple are no longer supplying for domestic use.

I'm looking forward to reading more recommendations. I've got carpet in my sitting room and hate it. The dogs spend a lot of time in here so it's just not practical - added to that a man who seems to bring part of the farm in with him when he comes in from doing a job!

I would like wood effect for the sitting room and tile effect for the kitchen. Will look at Karndea - and make sure I'm sitting down by the sound of it!!

Karndean is the cheaper version of Amtico that my daughter has!  I got a very good deal (with some negotiation!) from my local supplier to supply and fit.  It worked out cheaper than middle range carpet and looks as good as it did when it was first put down 4 years ago. :)  I either sweep or vacuum and steam clean about once a week so I know it's REALLY clean.
I believe that you can buy on Ebay and fit yourself but I decided that was beyond my DIY skills, especially when I saw 3 layers of insulated board put down before each piece of 'plank'. :)

I have had 'piddleproof' carpet from Ollerton Hall before now and that lasted very well with dogs, puppies etc but it did need monthly shampooing to keep it presentable.
- By ridgielover Date 10.10.11 12:22 UTC
Umm - not sure if I want something "planky" - I'd worry about the gaps in between ...
- By WestCoast Date 10.10.11 12:50 UTC
Absolutely no gaps.  One of the reasons that it's more expensive that cheaper imitations is because it's precision cut.
It might be worth a visit to a supplier where they will have samples, both loose and in a fitted section so that you can see how it works. :)  It really doesn't compare with the DIY stuff in B&Q etc.
But of course, it's up to you, I'm not on commission!  I just wish that I'd found it years ago and avoided wasting money on carpets and time cleaning them. :) :)
- By ridgielover Date 10.10.11 13:48 UTC
Absolutely no gaps makes it worth looking at :) Thanks, Westcoast, will investigate ...

Like sound of Karndean, although not for this project - quick, practical, cheap fix whilst toying with moving whilst living with 6 dogs who 'enjoy' the great outdoors - my back garden! But for future ref, you mention ridges - is this specific to a non-slip version or is it generally textured. How about the bare foot test? Warm or cold? I know it is stocked in showroom in town but as laid up with bad back it may be some time before I get there! Oh & do the ridges hold the dirt - given I dont have a steam cleaner?
- By WestCoast Date 10.10.11 16:45 UTC Edited 10.10.11 16:56 UTC
:)
If you Google Karndean (sorry I failed when I tried to copy n paste the site!) it shows many types and you can see how there are no gaps when its fitted.  Done it!! http://www.karndean.co.uk/site/home.cfm
Mine is Knight Tile Pitch Pine and it's a much warmer colour than the website shows so you do need to see samples for colour and texture.
They will post you as many samples as you want to see.  The samples make good coasters! :)
I'm not sure that any are specifically non slip.  I just chose one that was ridged rather than completely smooth, specifically having seen so many dogs slipping on laminate. :(
It's quiet to walk on and not cold to the foot, both because of the construction and the insulation underneath, VERY different to laminate.
My ridges don't hold any dirt.  A mop and bucket will do just fine to clean - that's what my daughter uses on her upmarket variety!  I just like steam rather than chemicals where ever I can. :)  The steamer has also has paid for itself many times over now that I don't buy oven cleaner, floor cleaner, tile cleaner, bath cleaner, window cleaner etc as well as no dry cleaning bills! :)
Have fun investigating. :)

amtico and karndean here and amtico is guaranteed for 20 years. love it.  karndean tiles in conservatory and bathroom. amtico in lounge and porch - 4 dogs and no probs.
- By Trialist Date 11.10.11 07:50 UTC
OK now trying to get the thread back to my original question :) Appreciate there are better options but sadly I am working to limited budget which is why I'm down to lino.

Anyone got a brand of lino they would particularly recommend as being non-slip & therefore safe for household of 6 BCs for use in hall & living room?
- By satincollie (Moderator) Date 11.10.11 08:40 UTC
I have rhinofloor throughout the downstairs and a few collies ;-)
- By furriefriends Date 11.10.11 17:24 UTC
Amtico here I love it there are some cheaper ranges within amtico. I know karndean is similar so would def look at both for design amd price. There are not gepas and the slate one in the hall is less slippy for the dogs and I would have that if i were to redo the kitchen or extended it
- By Trialist Date 11.10.11 18:38 UTC
but I can't afford amtico, Karndean, rubber, real wood, etc, no matter how whizzo it is ... It's vinyl or nowt & it may well end up as nowt.

Satincollie - thank you :-)

We're in the same situation, and have a friend who is a flooring fitter - he recommends the better quality vinyls, especially for those of us for whom Karndean is not an option!

Now the only problem is that the lounge needs repainting before we replace the threadbare carpet...and has done for the last two years or so. This is not a cost issue, but a motivation one...

I've not seen the rhino floor but when I googled it, the supply only price was VERY little different to what I paid for Karndean to be supplied and fitted!

You can assume very little these days................ I research everything intensely and don't cross anything off the list without fully investigating and contacting a few suppliers first and before I part with a penny and I found that GOOD quality vinyl was more expensive than the price I paid for my Karndean. :)
- By Trialist Date 12.10.11 07:41 UTC
Hear what you're saying, and really, I'm sold on the idea ... well, along with rubber :-) But, basic cost to complete the rooms is over £500 more. That sadly is not findable ... it's been an expensive year!

But thanks for comments.

Thanks too to Satincollie who pointed me to a good supplier ... samples ordered to decide on colour & cheque book at the ready :-) Do you do gardens too? That's the £500 project the Karndean would have taken ... we have a mud bath :-(
- By WestCoast Date 12.10.11 08:05 UTC
Trialist, my local supplier quoted far less than the official website. wink wink. :)  But then if you're into rubber - haha! :)

Will you fit yourself?  I can do small rooms but not a living room. :( :(
