...actually it's a Henri Lloyd but the weatherproof and thornproof wax is the same!

I have a coat that is donkeys years old but I love it - except that over the years it's got less and less waxy til it's now just plain cotton and lets in the rain.  I've finally given in and washed it ready to start again.  Have any of you done this?  Is there anything I need to watch out for?

One of the reasons I've left it so long is that I like the thorn and weather proof idea but I don't like a really heavy wax finish, or the smell.  I don't want it to feel too greasy if that's possible :)

I sprayed mine with the aerosol stuff last year and was not impressed. It is showerproof but not up to coping with a real deluge and up here in Aberdeenshire we get a lot of those. I shall be washing it again and going back to good old wax for this winter

Oh now you have got me all nostalgic, I loved my Barbour and its smell. Can't afford another one now but I'd love to have a sniff of someone else's, hahaha.

Agree with Nova, sent OH's back to Barbour for re waxing and it literaly slid out of the packaging. He has worn it since as it had plently of years wear left but oh the smell and weight. It was like a greese.

I have the same problem with mine! It desperately needs re-waxing as last winter i was soaked to the skin. But its a great coat with various pockets that can hold tennis balls, phone, keys, vast array of dog treats and a large secret pocket for bagged doggy doos! until i find a bin!
Think i'll suffer the waxy smell as no other coat i have comes close!

I re-waxed my Driza myself with no problem, did take ages as it's a full length coat, and very messy as it's best to do it with your hands to get it well worked in.

I'm hoping that if I do it myself I can put just enough on to do the weatherproofing job effectively but not so much that I get that nasty greasy finish.  I was reading online somewhere that it's a good idea to use a hair dryer on it after application   ...they didn't say why though!

I always use the tin of wax and use a hairdrier to help me!

I have re-waxed New Zealand rugs before now, I think the modern ones are made of a fabric that doesn't need it. That takes forever and the smell as you try to keep the rug warm enough for the wax to go on easily is erm -ripe, I think is the word. But it kept that rug going for another couple of years.

The hairdryer is just to make sure it's well soaked in and even.

I bought some Henri Lloyd wax today for my coat and it's a loss less whiffy than Barbour wax but does the same job.

My OH has done my coat this evening - hair dryer an' all - and we're waiting to see how it looks tomorrow, after hanging in a warm place overnight.  It certainly doesn't appear too greasy, so far, but I suspect than I might need to re wax it again quite soon as going from almost plain cotton to a proper wax finish might take a couple of applications...

Long time since I did one, but used barbour wax tins, newspaper on kitchen table, hair drier and when worked in go over it again with hair drier and hung in hotpress for few nights.  Loved the smell of my old barbour, brought back many memories!

Motorcyclists often use Nikwax for reproofing their waterproofs.

This post had spurred me into action and so I went with OH to the local country store to buy a tin of wax - and came home with a gun !!!
I did get the wax as well though haha
