Topic Dog Boards / Showing / Non Alergenic Shampoo ?
- By Banger [gb] Date 08.01.03 13:48 UTC
Can anyone recommend a non-alergenic shampoo to use for Max. He's been to the groomers twice now and each time he has returned he has been scratching a lot. So much so that he has scratched a hole in his fur/skin on his shoulder twice. This last time its got infected and he's had to be put on anti-biotics. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Have you asked your groomer what shampoo they use? When I did my training they used human shampoos. I've always used a tea tree oil shampoo for grooming my dogs but a good quality lavender one would help as well. However I would ask your groomers for details of all the products they have used on him. Some groomers use a 'cologne' as well and this could be a problem too.

a groomer I know, told me at the training school she went to they used human shampoo and conditioner, from a hairdresser suppliers - I use baby shampoo, on the grounds that if it is gentle enough for a baby bonce then its got to be ok for my 'orrible lot:D you could also try the 'simple' range with no additives as well - Julie:)

Thanks Bec. No we haven't asked yet as we are undecided wether to take him back. He's been to two different groomers and the same effect each time. The Vet recommended we find a non-alergenic shampoo and ask them to use that - is why I posted. I think we have used a tea tree shampoo when we used to bathe him ourselves but cant remember if he scratched at all with that - although I know he didnt scratch a hole in his skin with that. Yes each groomer did use a cologne but it is my understanding that a different one was used each time so the only common factor is the shampoo, or so I assume. We will probably ask them not to use the cologne next time to see if its that. I think a tea tree based shampoo is probably the way to go.

Julie - yes the vet recommended a baby shampoo too, good idea.

Hi Banger - not wishing to hijack your thread, I worried a bit about tea tree shampoos, after reading about a dog who had licked up a small amount of concentrated tea tree oil and had died almost instantly:( made me panick a bit - I used to use it a lot, but I'm the sort of dumbo who would drop it accidentally, so steer clear now - but I would supposed that the amount in shampoo must be negligable? what do you reckon? Julie:)

Had no idea that tea tree oil was so lethal although I can imagine that there is only a small amount in shampoo. We're probably going to discuss it with the groomer next time he goes and maybe a baby shampoo may do the trick.

No neither did I until I read about this dog - apparently it wasn't the whole bottle or anything just a big drop! Don't know if anyone else had heard of this? Julie:)

Bangor I used to use Maleseb on my Sharpei but found the human bacterial wash Bethadine much better , and cheaper . The Maleseb was £20 the Bethadine under £5..It leaves the dog skin squeeky clean and the coat shiny

Berry scratched herself inside out Gina but since using the Bethadine she has stopped scratching..I was asking my doctor how the cairn terrier puppy was and he said he had stopped scratching since he used it.
So I bought some and found he was dead right.
So Gina if I were you I would give it a go.
Dizzy recommended the Maleseb to me and it is good . but it wasent as lasting as the Bethadine.

Hi!

The best shampoo I have ever used is called "Malaseb" (it is an anti bacterial) unfortunately it is only available from the vets, but does last ages. There is no itching or scurf. You could take the shampoo to the Groomers with you, and ask them to use that instead!
Regards

I am a groomer and i would say that Malaseb is the best thing for dogs that suffer with itchy skin or reactions to other shampoo's, lots of owners bring me there own shampoo and any groomer that would refuse to use the owners choice should not be grooming.
It's not the cheapest but it really is one of the best.

We had no luck today. Seems to be a shortage round here!! Husband tried every chemist he passed and Boots. Boots said they (the company who sell it) were having trouble with distribution at the moment and hopefully we would find a chemist with some in stock. So shall carry on trying :)

Mine says "Betadine Shampoo"

"Effective medicated treatment for dandruff and other scalp conditions. Gentle to hair, germicidal and conditioning."

Got it from Boots a couple of days later, they had to order it and said there are distibution problems.

Manufactured by the Seton Healthcare Group - I hope I got the right stuff - I think I did but its a small 250ml bottle and was £4.00 odd. The Pharmacist in boots said to not use to much as it's extremely concentrated.
