My setter puppy has been getting an upset tummy since his second jab & worming two weeks ago although his pooh has always been on the soft side of good. He was on Challenge salmon and rice puppy which I slowly swopped to CSJ cp 27 as I feed csj to my other setters and found it fantastic they also get tripe etc. after he was settled I started to introduce a little tripe which he loves if fact he eats what ever is put in front of him but his tummy is terrible his poo ranges from soft but normal to terrible very loose and horrid. I've taken him to the vets twice who says he is fine but did give me some pro kaolin which helped. He is happy playing sleeping normally is growing well drinking well etc.
Where am I going wrong?
He has three meals a day mostly tripe about half pound (shared out) from berriewoods with cp27(lamb & rice) not quite a cup full each meal.Is this too much?
To be graffic poo starts off ok ish but gets worst as the day goes on last night the dear chap was very loose so starving him today and off to the vets this afternoon.
Any help, advise would be gratefully received.

I know it is difficult with a puppy(you not actually stated an age) but the best thing to do for an upset stomach, is no food for 24 hours but must have access to water. It doesnt sound too much food for a setter but not heard of the dry food your giving.
If pup is of 2nd injection age I wouldn't be starving him.
I find puppy poo is generally pretty awful on kibble, whatever version they're fed! They get so much food at this age at regular intervals that it never seems to get the time to form properly and even slight variations in portion sizes can have an immediate effect... Incidentally that's why poo is often firmer in the morning as it's been sitting in the intestine for longer overnight
I'd reduce the portion sizes a bit, change treats to bland ones and follow vet advice. Just dropping 5g from each meal might be enough to make a difference - it's a balancing act :) I also have a brilliantly helpful and knowledgable breeder who I can call at any time for stuff like this - can your breeder give you some advice? If they've kept a pup themselves then perhaps they could talk you through their portion sizes and meal times to see if you are on the right track. I'd also be inclined to keep some fish food in your pups diet - how was he on the Challenge S & R? I use fish 4 dogs (puppy and adult) food alongside a raw diet.
If you are comfortable with raw feeding try giving a chicken wing every other day or so. Your puppy will be able to handle it very well at this age and if you feed it partially frozen then it's very soothing for teething gums too. Hope all goes well at the vets this afternoon

My 2 pups have had loose stools as have their siblings.I have cut out dry food for the moment and just feeding raw.I agree that the other owners are over feeding and over indulging. The puppy on raw is doing well and has an experienced owner.Try raw chicken wings and a suitable bone to chew on.Try a little probotic yogurt to restore the normal flora in the bowel.
Thanks for the advice.
The vet visit went well and said starving him was the right thing to do and to start off with chicken and rice but he said to put him on Hills but not sure I want to, think I would like to get him settled on a raw diet mainly. My other boys enjoy both but were raised on RC. Should I consider swopping him really don't want to as I've been pleased with CSJ.

I'm assuming that pup is still under 12 weeks old?
If so perhaps going back to 4 or more smaller smaller meals spaced out longer.
At this age mine get their last meal at 10pm and first at 8am, with the other two half way betwen (Lunchtime and teatime).
What was the wormer, could Giardia infection be a possibility. Panacur will treat this by giving the puppy dose over a longer period (I beleive 5 - 7 days)

Same advice as me then..lol...
Although it goes against what you think, for a puppy...no food for 24 hours, is by far the best option..no point adding fuel to the fire by giving food, as it is not doing the pup any good and wasting your money!!!
As long as the puppy is well and happy in itself I would withold food for 24 hours as previously suggested.
Then feed one well cooked scrambled egg ( cooked with no fat..I do mine in the microwave).
At the next meal a cupful of cooked white rice with a tablespoon of live natural yoghurt on top.
Then for the next meal deboned chicken joint that has been simmered for 20 minutes and an equal quantitty of freshly cooked rice. Then for breakfast the next day repeat.
I would only feed twice or three times daily until the poo improves. Give no milk and encourage water drinking.
Also I have never had a problem with young puppipes when worming with Drontal, I feel it is far superior to any other worming product.
The best recipe I know to stop a loose tummy is as follows:
Day 1) Starve for 24 hours and give only boiled water.
Day 2) Feed mashed hard boiled eggs with cooked white rice for days 2 and 3. Must be hard boiled eggs and not scrambled eggs because need the dry sticky consistancy.
Day 3) same as above.
Day 4 and 5) Feed cooked white fish with white rice.
(Always give the boiled water to drink throughout)
Day 6 & 7) Feed usual dry puppy complete food with the white fish slowly decreasing the fish by day 7.
I have found this is the best effective way to stop the trots.

For runny stools provided an infection has been ruled out I give steamed mashed pumpkin[been told butternut squash works too],I keep some frozen in ice cube tray size bits in the freezer, one or 2 cubes usually sorts out the problem, carry on feeding as normal.
