Topic Dog Boards / Health / Insurance for Boxer aged 7
- By Dexy [gb] Date 02.10.11 07:55 UTC
Just about to renew insurance for Dolcie my 7 y.old Boxer and Tesco are asking for almost £37/month (claimed with all 3 dogs in the last year, 2 of whom we sadly lost). The policy only covers £2500 per condition/or 12 months so I can only think the £13 increase per month is on her age.

Would be interested to hear of any recommendations for other insurances please of similar age + breed.

Animal Friends Pet Insurance is coming out at £14/mth but a friend told me that there is a % to pay on any claims for older dogs??

Any postings gladly welcome.

Thank you

The percentage for Animal Friends is 35%, as I understand it this comes in at 8 yrs old - I'll go check my boy's policy.

Edit - yep, for 8yrs and over it's £69 or £99 (you pick when you do the quote) and 35% for each claim.

Most (if not all) policies will ask for a percentage at some point - some are later than others though.  Soli is with Petplan and I do recommend them - the first premium is higher than many (I did a quote for a 5yr old dobe and it was about £35 for the £4k cover), but the premium hikes are small (as they are with Animal Friends IME).  Soli's has double over the course of 10 years - it's £37 now, and the percentage (20%) only came in when she turned 10 this year.

I've got my 6 year old Dobe insured with Vetsmedicover (http://www.vetsmedicover.co.uk/index.php?affiliate=122304) after enormous hikes in the premiums with AXA and previous hikes with M&S. Unless the dog to be insured is one of the "select" breeds (which a boxer isn't) the cost is £21 a month. I think dogs must be under 8 when the policy starts. Lifetime cover and £10,000 vet fees a year.

If this helps,i insured one of my dogs with John Lewis for £16 a month, for £10.000 cover per year excess i think about £60 something like that, had previously been with Pet plan £6.000 cover for £29 a month, although my dog is only ten month,so age may make a difference.

They also pay out for travel expenditure if animal has to see a referral vet, which pet plan don,t to my knowledge.

We're insured with protect my bubble, £7500 per year for £115 a year, interestingly renewal has just come through and it's gone down £8 from last year.

Has anyone had any claims from vetsmedicover as they don't sound bad but you never know until you have had a claim.
