Hi All,
One of my elderly toy breeds have torn their nail (left hind leg, 1st nail). I took her to the vets on Wednesday, the vet said its too attached to just pull away so he has put her on Carprodyl for a week to see if it falls off by its self. She doesn't seem in pain but it doesn't look like its going to fall off anytime soon. He put a buster collar on her so she cant lick it as he said that if she does it will cause infection. Im bathing in salt water twice a daily.

Is their anything else I can do?

Any time this has happened to my lot the vet just clips the whole thing off, they did leave it one time but it was such a nuisance getting caught on things that now I insist they take it off. I'd be inclined to bath it after every trip outside, they get infected so easily.

One of mine did this. The vet said he would need sedating the remove the nail, but by the next day the nail had dropped off. I suspect with a little help from the dog. All we had to do then was keep it clean.

My vet sedates and removes the whole thing, right up to the nail bed.  A self adhesive bandage is put on for a couple of days to protect the sore area, so the soft tissue can start to harden up.

I would never again have one left, as they end up hurting themselves anyway, so I say get rid!  :-)

Mine would get distressed being made to wear a collar to be quite honest.

Same here, nail hanging off, so vet just quickly clipped it,i think I felt worse than the dog,but better as its over,so really get rid of it.

Took her back to the vets today, he said its now infected!! So has started her on Amox tabs. I asked if he can remove it but he said he wants the infection to clear up first.

"Also shes 4kg but hes put her on 100mg of amox twice a day???"

Wouldn't like to comment on whether what he's doing is the right treatment or not but this site is very useful for finding out information on veterinary medicines (link takes you to info on amoxycare - not sure if this is the medication you refer to that your your dog's been given)
