Despite being cautious about my 5 month puppy only meeting friendly dogs, today she was attacked - when I say attacked, she was pinned to the ground. Attacking dog growling/snarling lots whilst doing so & my pup screaming her head off. No physical injuries however she was plainly terrified and had her tail clamped between her legs for the remainder of the walk. I quickly found a gentle pup of the same age/size but she wouldn't go near it. So now I am extremely concerned about any mental scars from this horrid encounter.

What makes me angry is that as the owner and dog approached from the side she was calling her dog in a way like she KNEW what he was going to do and sadly I was unable to prevent it. Attacking dog ran off when he saw me coming and I just walked the other way calling my two to follow in a happy voice while absolutely fuming inside!

Do I just go on as normal with pup like nothing happened? Seems the best solution but wanted ideas - she's got some shows coming up.

dogs with a good genetic blueprint and robust socialisation are not going to be ruined for life by one encounter.  So jolly hockeysticks approach is called for I think.

You can try continuing to walk but maybe in a different area, my lad was attacked at 6 months old and he is over 7 yrs now and won't even go through the gates to that part of the park, even tried a different entrance, quite happy to go to the bit on the other side of the road.

The owner of the attacking dog was running from their house screaming at me to scruff his dog which I did and picked up my pup and put the other one down by the time the owner reached me,luckily it was only a small terrier breed. This appeared to be a regular event from what the owner said of the dog escaping and attacking other dogs regardless of size,I said he needed to sort this as he could do more damage had I not intervened,he then leaned forward to speak to Rhuari and nearly lost his nose,stupid man,poor pup had been attacked and then the man who had been screaming at me tries to speak sweet nothings to him,what did he expect.

Yes carry on with her as normal, take her to places where she is going to meet lots of friendly dogs and give her chance to meet and greet them in her own time.  I am sure she will bounce back.  My Rottie was told off a couple times - I say told off, she was dragged by a male Weimaraner and pinned down and shaken by her ears and a collie also had a pop (both dogs are known by the owners to be like this but as they were offlead I was unaware of their temperaments until now)....anyway I carried on as normal and at 2 years old she is still the same happy, friendly girl who loves everyone and every dog.

I think it depends on the individual but do agree that if genetically she has a sound temperament, she should get over it. The jolly approach is usually best, but if you find her still as unnerved tomorrow, I would give her a little time and space to recover and forget about her nasty shock. The last thing you want to do is make her even more anxious. Ideally I would let her have a few calm controlled greetings, where she is not put under any pressure to interact. I am so sorry ..your poor puppy what a sad thing to happen , I would have been so angry talk about grab the agressive dog by the scruff I would have knocked its lights out... this sort of situation is becoming to common...

I am sure as others have said gently does it for a while but hopefully with more good than bad situations pup will come through it. Try not to pass your concerns through the lead.....easier said than done I know.
