My gsd seems to have itchy feet mainly betwen his toes. I have looked and looked and had his groomer check him today as well. Before we go off to the vet does should I try thornit or diatamous earth ?

Have not tried diatamous earth (though having read such good things about it, I should get some) but have used thornit for a long time. Give it ago it can't do any harm. Good luck

Thank you have decided DE first then I will try thornit and unless he gets really distressed I wont go to the vet. Poor boy and he looks so smart now he has been professionally groomer I was hoping a good bath would help but no he is still nibbling and licking

I'd start with daily dilute Hibiscrub wash (remember to dry thoroughly afterward as damp toes can make any itching worse) before trying anything else.  It's my catch all solution for a number of problems and a pretty good default.  I have a dog with allergies and I find it important to remove traces of pollen, mud and other irritants after each walk.

If that didn't resolve it I'd probably go to the vet next although a really good look with a magnifying glass and a bright torch might reveal something you haven't previously seen and send you there earlier :)

I must confess I'd spend time looking for the cause too if this is a new problem - carpet, different walk, new washing powder?

Thanks dogs a babe thats a good idea I have some in the cupboard and forgot it doh !. I have picked my brains trying to see what could be causing it particulaly possible allergens , unfortunately I cant come up with anything unless its a recent allergy to something that has always been there which is going to be difficult to track down. He isnt usually an itchy dog but, just for good measure, I made sure he had been frontlined as well but no sign of any fleas and feet would be an unusual place to start.
Anal glands I supose could be another but never had aproblem there,may get sil (ex vet nurse) to have look there  
Right torch and magnifying class followed by hibiscrub I may well try DE anyway if the hibscub doesnt solve it as it has been recommended so often as has thornit
I would like to do the simple things first before the vet if possible

Hi ff - try double checking for Harvest Mites whilst you are peering in there with a torch - might be a bit late in the year for them but worth a look.  You'd probably see them in his armpits too.

Muck spreading is a bit of a culprit for itchy feet nr me and all the farmers are currently flinging this stuff about.  Are you field walking?  If that is the case you can send your pooches through a Hibiscrub foot bath after each walk.  A bit of old carpet soaked in HS and placed on the bottom of something like a cat litter tray works well or just slosh toes in a bucket.  Mine have to be hosed off as the muck gets stuck to tummies, inside ears, etc then they get Hibiscrubbed :)

Yes he is field walked but they havnt been spreading in these fields just grass and woods.
He did a couple of months ago manage to give himself a hotspot between his toes by nibbling an licking but that went away with vet treatment I dont want him to do that again.
It looks like perhaps we didnt get to the bottom of the problem. Will check his armpits as well thanks DaB

two of my dogs are also licking between thier toes and making it pink I think it has something to do with the time of year and certain grasses etc: I have bathed with hibi dried off then put socks on so they cant lick until they heal a little.

A long shot I guess as you didn't mention his ears but - when my boy had yeasty ears the Vet told me they can transfer it to their feet when they scratch.  Are his ears OK?
