Take heart, Jean....the words and prefixes come from two separate language families and mean nothing alike ;) :D
mal·a·mute--Any of a breed of powerful dog developed in Alaska as a sled dog and having a thick gray, black, or white coat.
entymology: Short for
malamute dog, from
Inupiaq Malimiut, name of a subgroup of the Inupiaq.
The prefix "mal" originates from Latin to convey 'ill' or 'not well' ...such as maladjusted or maltreated.
But it is a cute analogy ;)
