yes matetel isnt made anymore. I have one and its been pretty good for me.  But i would assume any microscope would work the same, its just saliva crysalising on a microscope as far as i am aware :)

i just bought a cheap microscope from Argos and did the test myself. I googled saliva canine ovulation images and saw what i should be looking for. I have used it three times with great results. As ovulation is nearing the salts crystalize into a ferning shape. When this starts you have roughly 4 days to take the dog to stud. Hope  this helps. I am currently using it at present and is starting to fern
