Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Puppy Eating Poo!!

Hi Everyone.
I have a 13 week old chocolate labrador (Chester) who as just decided we don't feed him enough and
to start eating his poo! Is this normal? What can be done to stop him? Will it do him any harm?
I have had dogs in the past (never a labrador) and none of them have done it!

Hello guest
Sorry not a expert on this, but most puppies will eat try to eat most things including there on poo! try not to give them the chance to eat it,remove it straight away and when you see your pup doing this or about to tell them off with a strong sharp NO.

Thanks Zimzam, I have been doing that,I will see how it goes! It's the ones that happen late at night that you miss, you can guantee he dosen't. It's not as if I have ever told him off for messing in the house, which I know sometimes can make them eat it out of fear for being told off, but that is not the case !!

Hi

Probably something he is missing in his diet - what are you feeding him on?
Does he only do it at night? How's the housetraining?

Cheers
Chloe

Hi, there have been a lot of threads on this lately, a lot of dogs do it:D One of mine included - although thankfully cured now:) click on the search at the top right and type in 'eating poo' or 'eating stools' etc and you will get loads of posts up on the subject, with peoples advice and experience of it - it took me ages before I realised there was a search facility on this site:o HTH Julie:)

Hi Chloe
No not just at night, it's the last thing at night ones that don't get cleared up till morning! He never poops
in the house during the night, well not really at all now, unless we have to go out and then only on his paper!
So his toilet training is come on very well, he's now sitting at the door to go out and if you don't see him
he will let you know!
Feeding him on Beta Puppy which is what the breeder was giving them, when we went to the vets for
injections, he had his MOT she said he was fine.
Well its nearly 5'oclock no poo as been eaten today, I have left one down on purpose and been watching
him like a hawk every time he goes out!! Finger's crossed it's just a passing phase!!

It's just possible that, if you clear up after him very quickly, he may think that you don't like to see the poo, and so he "removes the evidence". Not that I'm saying you've ever scolded him for pooing, perish the thought!, just that he may have got a little confused.

I had a very geriatric bitch a couple of years ago, who became incontinent in her bowels, and she would poo without knowing it, often in her sleep. If she woke and saw it on the sofa where she slept, she would "clear it away" (yuck!). And she was never scolded either. She just knew it shouldn't be there.

Leaving it down for a little longer might, if this is the reason he's doing it (and I've found labradors as a rule like to help!) let him relax about it and learn to ignore it.

Good luck!
