Always wanted one, read up a bit but if anyone has any extra advice it would be most welcome.
Its a strange story, yesterday walking our dogs a young bird flew and landed on my arm,I was very suprised,it then flew to my husband mat, this little thing stayed either on me or mat the whole walk, flying away doing loops and came back 3 times.
Turns out it was a young swallow, long story short got a cage and took him to our local bird watchers observatory and center, they couldn't believe it,I put my hand in the cage and he hopped on and just stayed there as I lifted him out, they said that they had never seen anything like it and rushed to get cameras, he sat on everyone posing for pics, they also said he just chose us,I went inside to watch some birds being ringed and the swallow flew in after me,they explained that he feeds on the wing so no one can really keep them,I wouldn't want to he is a wild bird. They have a tower with swallows nesting so we hope he will take up with them.
When he flew again,it was because he saw another swallow and me and mat said our thankyous and dived for the car as I was scared he would come to us again.
So, one big empty cage.
went to get a canary ,hes yellow ,has a ring round his leg saying he was born in 2010,and this morning has just given me his first song,he is absolutely beautiful,we called him piper.
His cage is round, which apparently is wrong, but it is big,has different height perches and a swing, which he loves. He has seed, grit and a cuttle fish and also had a slice of pear.yesterday all he did was eat.
I covered him up last night and peeked in to see he was fast a sleep head tucked under wing.I will let him fly free as I have quite a big hallway that can be shut off from dogs and the cat.
How I get him back in the cage will be another matter. So is there anything else I should be doing? I think he must be quite happy as he didnt say a word yesterday only bought him home at 4 o clock, and this morning singing.

Many years ago we had a budgie. When he had had enough of flying free he would sit on top of his cage then he would perch on your finger to be put back in the cage. Some budgies will go back in themselves if you leave the door open. I have also heard of throwing a duster or light cloth over to catch them, but we never needed to.  A friend of ours used to put her canary's cage outside when it was warm and sunny, and it would sing away to it's hearts content. Lucky you, enjoy !

Do you have a male or female?

I just heard that males sing more then girls- not sure how true as I have never had a canary.
I like the ones that looks like they are wearing a toupee lol
Have heard them singing in the pet stores, very lovely.
Enjoy ur lil one :-)

Female canaries tweet a bit but it is the males that sing the most.
The ones with a creasts are glosters
Sounds like you have everything he needs and hes happy :-D
