Anyone else having a run of mahousive spiders this year? Ive found 3 already and were not even in September yet. Luckily my cats think they are great to play with and subsequently eat!

One under my pillow when I got into bed last night - it was huuuuge, and very fast!!
- By Paula [gb] Date 31.08.11 12:36 UTC
Aaaaaaaaaaaaagggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!

I really wish I hadn't opened this thread *shudders*

Will be stripping the whole bed before I get in it tonight now!!!!

I'm with you Paula, this is an email I sent to the Silken Windhound list a little while ago, titled 'spider hunter gone bad', about my little silken and her view of spiders :-)

Ever since Milly was a pup she's been fascinated by spiders and creepy crawlies, I've encouraged her to eat spiders as I'm terrified of them. Now whenever I find a spider in the house I just shout 'Milly spiders' (in a high pitched panicky tone) and Milly comes racing from wherever she is and takes care of the spider - perfect. Of course she gets lots of praise for saving me.

This morning I was standing at the sink doing dishes and Milly nudged my leg with her nose, as she does when she has a toy she wants me to throw. I turned round and she's just staring at me, no toy in her mouth. I asked her what she wanted and she spat a spider out her mouth at my feet - still alive!!!! Arrrgggghhhhhhh. This is not what I wanted at all...lol Much leaping around screaming on my part and then Milly ate the spider. She obviously thinks I want to watch...lol.
- By suejaw Date 31.08.11 13:26 UTC
:-( Yes.....

I just don't like it.... They are everywhere and i'm petrified of 'em...But at silly o'clock i managed to be brave, turn my pillow around and the sleep the other end of the bed.. I think mine travelled to Furriefriends house overnight ;-)
- By jogold [gb] Date 31.08.11 14:38 UTC
hope you didnt land in the sink
- By chaumsong Date 31.08.11 14:42 UTC

> hope you didnt land in the sink

I almost did and now I'm worried that she's going to keep finding spiders and bringing them to me, so I can praise her for eating them!!!
- By ludivine1517 Date 31.08.11 15:10 UTC
yuk, do not like spiders and fortunately I have 2 bitches who loe nothing more than chase them and eat them!
Occasionally, I will trap the little ones and set them free outside as I know they help keeping flys numbers down.

I will be triple checking my bed before going to sleep tonight!! ewwww!
- By nesstaffy [gb] Date 31.08.11 16:50 UTC
I have had loads of massive spiders in our house and TILLY loves chasing and eating them but my friend got rid of a big one by the front door (wouldn't go near the door to answer it lol)
Any way i'm sure its back again "SHUDDER" even TILLY won't kill that one its too fast lol
I still have lots of flies in my front room tho lol

I don't mind spiders. One "friend" pointed out a massive cobweb going across my lounge, I said I was going to hang my Christmas cards on it.
- By Paula [gb] Date 31.08.11 17:34 UTC
Eurgh!!  I think Millie needs to learn to just eat them as soon as she finds them!!  When she does, send her over here to teach my two to do it as well!!
- By furriefriends Date 31.08.11 20:47 UTC
Yep i think he did sj ! and his friend too :)Fortunately they dont bother me but cant say that for other members of the family therefore I ma the one who has to go fetch  all the little beasties that are found
They do seem to be early and enorrrmoussee this year. Just saw a small one climbing down my mirror as I was putting my make up on
- By JAY15 [gb] Date 31.08.11 21:23 UTC
Spiders have very good eyesight and I think cobwebs are important to them as features on the landscape--think heritage and spider's built environment. I want to encourage my spiders so that they eat the real pests.
- By furriefriends Date 31.08.11 21:25 UTC Edited 31.08.11 21:27 UTC
Its bumping into the webs I hate then I feel quilty because I have destroyed all the spiders hard work
I never kill them infact I have a problem killing anything just remove them to stop other members of the hosue screaming.
Gosh and a spider in a classroom ! that really can cause chaos even the most badly behaved students can become quivering wrecks
- By JAY15 [gb] Date 31.08.11 21:27 UTC
It's a good thing they have some friends on here, I was beginning to think they were seriously out of luck what with everyone encouraging their dogs to eat them...
- By cornishmals [gb] Date 31.08.11 21:58 UTC
My eldest is staying over for a few days.Last night while bathing her daughter she gave a tremendous scream.Thinking something dreadful had happened I dashed up.Only to find a quivering wreck, shaking like a leaf and crying.Eventually when she could speak she pointed to the corner of the bathroom saying spider. She was so releived when I took a glass and caught it and took it out side.

Given half a chance the hoover eats the ones where I live, mwuahhahahah
- By Tessies Tracey Date 01.09.11 07:04 UTC
Don't want to jinx it... BUT... we haven't had any biggies (Huntsmen!!!) this year and considering the rain we've had over the last fortnight or so.. well...
but we are just going into Spring, so I can't say too much!!
- By Tadsy Date 01.09.11 07:12 UTC

>> Given half a chance the hoover eats the ones where I live

But then they live in the hoover!!

My Mum always used to say "if you want to live and thrive, let a spider run alive", now whilst I can't say I like the blighters, I can't kill them, so it's a glass and piece of card jobby for our house. Unfortunately the granddaddy house spider that "invaded" our house on Sunday morning needed something much bigger than a glass (think bucket), and he was right at the top of the wall where the stair drop is - we couldn't get to him so had to wait for him to come into reach. Needless to say he disappeared (can't say I was happy about that), fortunately he reappeared just before we were going to bed, next to the front door. OH was very brave and released him into the front garden - he thinks he raced him back in!

I'm just surprised we didn't hear him climbing the walls, sure he was wearing hob nailed boots.
- By suejaw Date 01.09.11 07:21 UTC
OOh now they are scary, this is what these spiders are like size wise, well very much getting on that way, but thank f*** they don't jump like a Huntsman otherwise i'd be jumping myself outta my skin.. Saying that when I lived in OZ I had to walk past loads of them, daily to get into my room when I was working in the outback :-( sudders at the thought now
- By Whistler [gb] Date 01.09.11 07:27 UTC
I take my special spider killer with me where ever I go - Whistler - he catches them and eats them - my hero!!

Yes I have noticed a lot but (thank goodness) small ones Huge and Im sat on top of the wardrobe I hate them.
- By Tessies Tracey Date 01.09.11 08:20 UTC
@ Suejaw.  Been here just over two years now and only ever seen baby Huntsman so far... thank goodness.. hubby has come across a few large ones as he works quite rurally, but nothing near the house....Oh dear... I've got to stop talking about them, I'm definitely going to jinx it!! lol  Brrrrr they're awful critters!!!
- By jogold [gb] Date 01.09.11 08:51 UTC
iv seen some that are as big as a plate
- By Paula [gb] Date 01.09.11 09:10 UTC
Stop it, stop it, stop it!!!

*puts hand over ears* lalalalalalalalalalala
- By furriefriends Date 01.09.11 09:58 UTC
Now sj foreign ones would stop even me in my tracks. the only reason I dont mind ours is because they are fairly harmless.
Its funny peole tell you not to pass your fears onto your children so explain this. I have a phobia about fire and all connected to it cant even watch things like that on telly or in the papers no worries however about most creepycrawlies and othe mini bests.
Meanwhile my kids arnt worried about fire in fact my 22 yearold son considering joining the firebrigade yikes !! I will never sleep again. Daughter hates creepy crawlies and son is kind of selective . So much for that physcology
- By Carrington Date 01.09.11 10:38 UTC
I've had some real whoopers here, the men in my house are frequently shouting , " big spider, come and get rid of it!!!" I've been catching them and putting them outside. Every time I evict one I say that they are here to do a job that my hoover and incessant cleaning doesn't do and it means less bugs get eaten and boy have I paid for it, something has had a real feast on me during the night. :-D So when I spotted a rather huge black spider this morning I told my hubby and sons that it is staying as I don't wish to be eaten alive again. :-)

I know they look scary, but they are friend rather than foe and I guess most of you are giving me the same look the men in my house do of utter horror  when I say that, but spiders are welcome here from now on no more evictions from me. :-)
- By happyhoundgirl [gb] Date 01.09.11 11:13 UTC
I'm with Paula and suejaw on this!! Shuddering thinking about it!! In fact this morning in the kitchen as I was walking about I spotted sliding down from the middle of the ceiling acting all nonchanlot Monsieur le Spiddy!!

I've got a one of those little plastic spider catchers and a bigger version, called Ben who's 14!! But the larger version was still in bed!! AAAArrrrrgggghhh!! Had to deal with it myself,so steeled my nerves and aimed plastic catcher ceiling wards and asked Monsieur Spiddy to place himself in it but did he oblige?? Oh no!! He thought he'd slipped round the side of it and aim for down the arm of my dressing gown!!

Lucky for me I was on form this morning, I did a quick side step followed by a nifty spin on my tiptoes and hot tailed it out the kitchen!! Ha!! Foiled his plan!! Drank a few steadying mouthfuls of tea and tried again, this time aided with household flea spray! Oh yeah I can play dirty too!!

Monsieur Spiddy was then captured on his way back to his ceiling hideaway and released to the garden. I have no doubt we will be seeing him and his pals! I just wish they wouldn't keep playing hide and seek and jumping out to surprise me when I'm on the floor playing with the dogs.

Last autumn one of Monsieur le Spiddy's pals sprang out from behind a dog bed whilst I was playing with the pup, obviously he was going for the surprise element.Though the sheer size of him was surprise enough!! I suspect the pup had been sharing her lunch with him. Either that or he was on steroids as he rattled when he shot up the hoover! Yuck!!!!
- By dogs a babe Date 01.09.11 12:20 UTC

> spiders are welcome here

Yes I think that too but I do draw the line at sharing my bed with them!
- By JAY15 [gb] Date 01.09.11 12:32 UTC
But then they live in the hoover!!

They aren't that indestructible, Tadsy--imagine being shotblasted with all the crap that comes off carpets in most houses--poor beggars! Even if they survive, they'd soon die on a diet of dust and dead skin cells. House spiders have a very tough life.

- By claire_41 [gb] Date 01.09.11 12:36 UTC
our old house had a resident beastie that used to run along the skirting board by the TV at 8pm EVERY night, strange little fella. As long as the dogs dont get to them they can go along their merry way in our house :)
- By JAY15 [gb] Date 01.09.11 12:42 UTC
LOL, a commuter!

"Honey, I'm on the skirting board!"
- By JAY15 [gb] Date 01.09.11 12:48 UTC
LOL Carrington, my 23 year old son completely freaks out at the sight of a modest little house spider. It occurred to me the other day how to get him to cut down on the beer (we've just had the local rhythm and booze festival and he was cross-eyed drunk when he came home, much to my extreme irritation)...I will ask him whether he isn't worried that while he is paralytic spiders could walk all over him--and he wouldn't even know...

hehehe...
- By jogold [gb] Date 01.09.11 13:05 UTC
i got no sleep last night after reading this yesterday looking forward to no sleep tonight again
- By Tadsy Date 01.09.11 15:21 UTC
The beastie we set free over the weekend would have broken the hoover if we'd dared to try and use it on him. He was absolutely mahoosive.

Note to all - don't click on the link JAY15 posted if you're even the slightest bit squeemish about piccies of spiders, let alone the real thing. I'm not too bad with them, but the photo on the guardian website did make my skin crawl a bit. ;-)

Sorry everyone--TBH I just read the article and didn't even notice the picture.
- By Paula [gb] Date 01.09.11 16:38 UTC
I had a feeling that it might have accompanying pictures so I didn't click on it, I really don't know why I keep punishing myself by opening this thread, I really must stop it now!!!
- By Tessies Tracey Date 02.09.11 07:53 UTC
Humph... well.. never mind spiders, just had to bug bomb my garage due to another not so nice critter that decided to crawl from under the internal garage door last night - a cockroach!!!!!!!  Arggghhhh!!  Only a little one, but the blighters get everywhere, it must be warming up here!

On a nicer note, we had a lovely little gecko sneak in through the open front screen door on Thursday, he was soon caught in a glass and given his freedom back on the front lawn :)
- By suejaw Date 02.09.11 08:25 UTC
I love Gecko's, if they are about the spiders aren't :-D

In fact I think I may just invest in some Gecko's for my new house, might keep the spiders at bay, which clearly nothing else is working!!
- By Paula [gb] Date 02.09.11 08:39 UTC
Aaaaaaaaaarghhhhh!!  Don't even mention the c-word Tessies Tracey!!!!!

*shakes*
- By Tessies Tracey Date 02.09.11 09:16 UTC

>I love Gecko's, if they are about the spiders aren't >

:) very true!!  They make the sweetest sound too, like lip-smacking!!
- By Tessies Tracey Date 02.09.11 09:18 UTC

>Aaaaaaaaaarghhhhh!!  Don't even mention the c-word Tessies Tracey!!!!!

>
Sorry!  They're fairly yucky must admit.

Good news is, I've checked the garage after the bug bombing and there aren't any casualties, so one can only assume it was a stray that got in through the electric garage door (hopefully!!!). :)
- By happyhoundgirl [gb] Date 02.09.11 15:10 UTC
Totally agree tessies tracy the, ahem ,c-word critters are way worse!! You can't even trust them to be dead when you've squished 'em!! Although I've benn lead to believe you're not supposed to do that.

Last time we went to Lanazrote we had a heat wave, odd for there I know but the place was heaving with them Been twice before and hardly saw a one. My eldest son was horrified but what he doesn't know is that the night we ate at an outdoor restaurant they were running amock on the decking!! He thought my mum and I were stamping our feet to keep warm, in 70* heat!! Bless him! We were keeping crawlies away from our table! Hideous!! Needless to say we didn't eat there again!!
- By WolfieStruppi [gb] Date 02.09.11 20:49 UTC
I wouldn't like the poisonous spiders you get in Oz but I judged an 'oddest brace' class at a fun day - out comes a dog & a Tarantula which sat quite happily on my hand (poor thing had a leg missing).
- By Pinky Date 02.09.11 21:16 UTC
I'm not fond of the eight legged beasties but I wouldn't kill one cos they eat flies and they're yuck :)

We have monsters that crawl around our house they have boots muscles and tattoo's :( even my Goldie moves out of their way and my spider eating cat has gone to rainbow bridge so no help there :(

I'm trying to train my tiny cat to 'move' them but she doesn't like it when they wrap their legs around her nose :(
- By Tessies Tracey Date 03.09.11 14:31 UTC
he he he Pinky, don't even get me started on flies!  I'm sure Suejaw can confirm that Aus is just one big fly ....what's the word.. fly .. trap!  They are so darn sneaky!

My son and I were just talking of the 8 legged creatures, he has a real phobia, we just chased off a baby Huntsman, so definitely warming up to the s- season now!  Eugh..*shudder*!

Strangely enough, the poisonous ones don't bother me so much because they're more predictable.  We've had a couple of redbacks around and about the outside of the house, but we've been lucky so far with the 'biggies' :)
- By Pinky Date 03.09.11 16:05 UTC
">Strangely enough, the poisonous ones don't bother me so much because they're more predictable.  We've had a couple of redbacks around and about the outside of the house, but we've been lucky so far with the 'biggies' :-)

Oh crikes my skin is crawling :(

- By furriefriends Date 03.09.11 21:26 UTC
Now poisonous beasties would concern me.Now having a gecko or two would be nice sj , quite like snakes too but dont think they are any use with spiders :)
- By crinklecut [gb] Date 03.09.11 22:19 UTC
Just had one on my wall the size of China. Beats me how they can call them House Spiders - wouldn't get many that size into my little house.
- By suejaw Date 03.09.11 22:21 UTC
Redbacks don't bother me either, they are tiny and easy to stomp on, Huntsman are a different story, they are just BIG and JUMP!!!

Glad I never came across a Funnelweb, now that would of properly freaked me out.
- By suejaw Date 05.09.11 08:36 UTC
I had a massive party going on in my bedroom last night
The rain must of driven them in, I decided enough was enough and they all finished their dancing with Mr Dyson!! ;-)

However the ring leader was on the ceiling, far too big and dignified to be able to be caught, even I was scared on him!! Mr Dyson didn't want to attempt to bring him into his quarters either **shudders**

Lets hope he doesn't bring another party to my bedroom tonight, i'm hoping to catch him tonight but he is rather BIG and scary :-(
