Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Offering a dog at stud

We have now had several litters and have had a great experience not only with raising the pups but having them all go to great homes. I recently had somebody request my dog for stud service and this is something I am unfamiliar with as I own both male and female. I currently have no concerns about canine STD's as I own both male and female, I also know the quality of my dogs as well. Beyond disease are there any other concerns or questions I should ask or look into before committing to this person?

Have they proved their bitches worth in some way appropriate to the breed, compared her to the breed standard by showing, or worked the bitch.

Has the bitch had all the recommended health tests for her breed, and are you pretty familiar with the dogs behind her, as to whether combining with your dogs liens is likely to produce quality puppies.

Of course it goes without saying that your boy should be likewise.

Then do they understand the lifetime commitment to the puppies they may produce and be willing to take back or make provision for these pups, are you willing to do this too as the stud dog owner?

Have they the knowledge to properly rear and home a litter of puppies and offer the knowledgeable back up to new owners?

Thank you for your responses. this will be her 3rd and final litter. They have a stud they usually use but is no longer in a proximity to be available to  them.

Also my male has sired 2 liters and his personality has not changed in the least.

That to me would be a big red flag to me. A stud they usually use? Who does that other than a back yard breeder/puppy farmer? Wherever the stud dog is, we all tend to go for the best one there is for the bitch regardless of distance involved, and I personally see little merit in repeat matings unless the bitch for instance only had one sex of pups the first time round and the opposite was what was wanted to keep back.

Agree with Goldmalis comments on this.  What are their show or working successes, and their health screening results as I think these are just as pertinent if not more so?
