What do you do to keep a dog from getting over excited when you are leaving to go somewhere and training them to not bark so much, my Pom has such a loud yip and she only really does it when we are going somewhere and she gets excited. I mean she goes crazy, jumping and barking. Please help?!!??

She finds this rewarding, as sometimes it ends in her foing out with you.

When you have a bit of time, act as if you are going out, pick up keys lead etc, and if she goes OTT, say shysh, and go sit down again. Every time she gets silly, stop what you are doing as in getting ready and sit down ignoring her.

Another tack to take when you are actually taking her out is to ask her to shush, and behave, hold her in position if needed. If she barks turn your back on her until she stops jumping and barking at you. turn back towards her, and tell her to sit stand or whatever. Then put the lead on, if she starts going mad again, take lead off and sit down.

What you are trying to show her that when she goes nuts she doesn't get what she wants, and in fact it is counterproductive, as she doesn't get the atention/treat she is expecting.

Hello on reply to your dog barking on leaveing do you gve her attention when you leave if you do stop at onece its the same when you arrive back home do not take any notice of her untill shes relaxed and your ready to do so. This should help but only if you stick at it.

Buddy has begun barking alot for attention mainly when he wants to play but also for yummy tit bits.
I worried over this as i did'nt want it to become a habit but also that my neighbours might complain.
I would give in to him just for peace and quiet. BIG MISTAKE.
Now i try hard to ignore his barking by not making eye contact and walking away from him when he starts.
He does get the message eventually. Once he been quiet for a while i then go play with him.
It's on ongoing process and we're still working hard at it.
Good luck
