Topic Dog Boards / General / Is this what happens to dog show trophies?
- By Polly [gb] Date 26.08.11 19:37 UTC
On Dickensons Real Deal on ITV just now was a bloke selling a huge hall marked silver cup he won 10 years ago at a dog show. It had on it that it was a memorial cup and he won it with Dachs. It was huge. He turned down the dealer and sold it at the auction.

Is this what happens to trophies people kindly donate or in fact still own but loan to dog show societies???

I wondered if he had won it out right or had the dog show society decided to give up their trophies and let him keep it? I hope the show societies who have cups and trophies I have let them use keep a good track on them...

I won a trophy at a show recently, I asked about handing it back and they told me to keep it as they didn't want to keep cleaning it. Sooo..

This was huge and dated 1909 I would be very surprised if that was given away. He did say it was a breed club show he won it at.

Will now check with all the show societies holding trophies I have let them use.

1909 wow!!!
Just googled mine and it was donated by a top winning Bichon Kennel in the 90's..

I've been to shows where you're asked to pose with 'your' trophy for a photo, then they take it back :-)  Seems sensible I guess, but I remember being a little disappointed!!

That is a repeat & I happen to know the person who it is.

It depends on how the cup was 'given' to the club. Alot of cups are donated to clubs & if a club decides to stop giving out trophies then what usually happens is the person who donated the trophy is contacted. This doesnt always happen & if that person dies or contact is lost I believe it becomes club property. Trophies can be extreamly expensive to insure and this can be a reason why some clubs 'get rid' of trophies. I also think sometimes the last person that wins a trophy it becomes theirs if the club disbands the trophies.

Even if it was his to sell it's a shame if it just goes to a silver dealer to be melted down or the name polished off...

Mind you, if it was for darts, football or pigeon racing I don't suppose I'd be so bothered!

But what would happen to it otherwise...family dont always know diddly squat about dog shows & what happens, so they would only do the same, if it handed down to them. Like you say it was his to sell & there are virtually nil clubs that take on more trophies thesedays.

Sadly trophies go missing and family members when a person dies assume that the trophy belongs to them and sell/pass it on, in effect have been stolen.

Our breed club has some valuable/old trophies and some have found their way to ebay and abroad,.

I was surprised that a show society would give up a cup, I can understand if they did not want the bother and can also see that if the original donor had died that they may not have a family contact to pass it back to. It did make me wonder if the show societies I have trophies with would have my details to pass the trophy back to me if they decided not to award them any more. I'd have them back and probably allow another show to have them on the basis that they are returned to me if they did not want them any more.

It just had not occurred to me before that a show society would give up a trophy.

Agree.  If it is no longer viable to care for, insure it etc it would be better for them to sell it and use the funds for something like rescue.  I don't think too many donors' families would argue with that.

I use to be a member of one of the daxie clubs and I am sure I recall at a Ch show one year if you won a cup you kept it as they were becoming a liability. I know our breed club have problems getting Insurance. Where is the pleasure if you are in a busy area. I know one person with a big bathroom and they are kept in there.
I do recall the great pleasure we had in winning trophies in our showing days.
I do think clubs should contact donors before just getting rid of them. Sad world we live in.
We do have photographs of some of the best ones on the club website with a short history about the trophy.
