Wormeries work best when worms haver space to get away from the things they don't like: citrus, allium family, wet medium and so on. It also doesn't help if you overload them--if you have lots of kitchen waste you'd be better off with an anaerobic system (closed composter topping up kitchen waste with grass clippings.
I used a homemade 4' x 4' new zealand box, a pallet in the bottom laid with newspaper and kitchen waste was laid down on a grid system in rotation so that worms weren't overfaced. I several of these up, including one for my son's primary school. That was the only one that failed--when I had a look at it they'd been throwing plastic wrappings and leftover ice cream into it :-O!
Worth knowing that grated carrot or soaked bread is a food greatly appreciated by baby worms, worms are very hard working and they deserve a treat too!
