Hi
Can anyone recommend a good tooth cleaner to prevent build up and to also remove any present build up. Thanks.

I use a charcoal tablet for cleaning the big teeth, just rub it up and down on the tooth. The dogs don't mind a bit. Bones do the rest.
Descale with a dental descaler and then raw chicken wings a couple of times a week.
I've taken 2 dogs to the vet at different times over the last 6 months and been told by the vet that both of them needed to go in and have their teeth cleaned as they both have tartar.
One is 9 years which I can understand but the other is 18 months?
They would need to go under general anasthaetic and it could be over £150 each.
I've had dogs for over 30 years and until recently never been told my dogs needed to go in and have their teeth cleaned.
Is it a money spinner for the vet or a serious problem for the dog??

Bones!

Our local dog trainer had both his dogs teeth cleaned under GA and 3 months later the tartar was back. Both dogs are fed complete. It's not a permanent fix unfortunately. My dogs have marrow bones regularly which keeps their teeth pretty clean.
Do you think Stag Antlers are as good as marrow bones?
I just bought some and they all like them except the 9 year old!
My vet recommended Plaque Off and it seemed to do the trick - making the plaque pretty easy to shift.

I find different dogs have the problem to different degrees, some teeth seem to attract soiling and others remain clean with little effort. Of my dogs the eldest 13.5 years has lovely clean white teeth but the youngest, 8 has always have tartar on his teeth and it seems very difficult to keep removed no matter what I do.

another vote for Plaque Off, my dogs have had this for 5 weeks now and it is really helping.
