Hi all. What is Glucosamine. I have heard of it but not exactly sure what it does.

Its an oral supplement which helps to regenerate cartilage.

Thanks Lara. Could you use it on dogs with stiff hips? Can you get it from Health Shops or just the vet?
- By Lara Date 07.01.03 22:18 UTC
Yes I would use it without hesitation. You can get it from health shops, Boots, Superdrug etc.. but the last lot I bought was from Tesco's :)

Thanks Lara. One of my GSD's suffers from a stiff hip so think i might try it. Is it capsule form or liquid as i always worry about giving capsules in case it is not digested properly and ends up coming straight out the other end!

Capsules/tablets but I suppose you could break capsules open and squeeze them over food.

Does it matter what age the dog is as Tyler is only one. Can you use it long term?

Hi Fiona
I have been giving my small dog glusosamine for about 4 months (from when he was 10 months old). I paid £6 for 300 tablets (not capsules) which I ordered via an ad in one of the Sunday mags ! :).
I give him a third of a tablet each day (250 mg) - he weighs about 14lb.

Hope this helps.

We all take it in our house, the dogs, cat and us.

My doctor was involved in the clinical research of the product and it was he who adviced my hubby ( Joiner/carpenter) with sore knees to take it.

I believe it does not take away or repair any problems but helps stop the becoming worse.

We got ours buy one get one free from http://www.alternativemedicines.co.uk/
