Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Milk from a bitch or bottle feed?
- By Honey01 [gb] Date 20.08.11 19:00 UTC
I have a little problem, my bitch gave birth nearly 3 weeks ago, although it looks like she has plenty of milk, when we squeeze to see if she has milk nothing comes out.
One puppy the little runt, keeps sucking on the boys private parts and is getting a spray of urine. Should i try and bottle feed her as she seems always hungry. they look like they are putting on weight and we dont weigh them until Monday. Can some one suggest some thing please? Thanks.

At nearly 3 weeks old I would begin the weaning process.  Just because you cannot express milk, does not mean she does not have enough... it's the sucking action that draws milk down, not pinching...   I had a girl who would literally drip milk leaving a trail, but squeezing produced nothing but a tender teat.

sucking on males is normal, just keep removing her and put her on a teat, and begin weaning

If I was even slightly worried about a pup I would monitor it's weight daily.  Also, make sure she gets on back teats first, if necessary remove all other pups for a few minutes when mum feeds.  She may well be easy to wean but I would try and get her having as much of mums milk as possible at this stage.

Hey thank you for your message... Yes my bitch has done that, and it looks like she has milk there, and when the pups go on her they are really head butting her. i have also heard to feed them mince meat, but it needs to be frozen, and then defrost as there are a bug in the meat that only gets killed when frozen, i dont know how true this is......

Yes, Honey01 fresh meat should always be frozen and defrosted before being given. :-)

It's not unusual for pups to 'accidently' suckle their siblings bits, easily mistaken. :-D

Hi, Ok thats good then, i heard or should i say i read about it on here but there was not much information so i was not 100% sure so thanks for putting me right with them. If its already frozen do i defrost it and re freeze it again or is it ok to defrost and then give it to them?
Rose (the runt) does it all the time we keep taking her out and off but when we put her back in she is doing it again, the thing i dont like is that she is smelling of urine, and potential buyers wont buy if she is smelling.
Thank you for your message.

No, if it's already frozen just defrost as normal.  If it's fresh then you must freeze for at least 24 hours (personally I freeze for longer than 24 hrs) then defrost as normal.  We only use the best steak mince from the butcher in the village rather that supermarket meat.
