Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Importing a puppy

Hi all, Long time no speak lol.
My baby girl is just gone 5 months and is ready to go into the ring in the next 3 weeks...I cant wait! She has won a few smaller matches already getting a few 1st places out of 11, 14 and 9 puppies :-) I am so proud of her, still cant believe that I have bred her.
Anyway, I' ve got a few questions and wondered if you could help me. Ive seen a planned litter advertised in Spain that I am VERY interested in. Its not in the very near future but will probs be in the next year or so.
For those of you that have experience importing and exporting puppies can anyone tell me approx. costs if the puppy would usually sell for between £800-900 without import costs. Also what is the procedure if youlike? How old are they when they can come over to the UK, what vaccs etc do they need? Which would be the easiest way to bring it in?
Sorry but dont have a clue , just after the basics for now to give me a bit of an idea of what to expect before I go jumping into anything

Thanks
Hope you are all well
Amy

I don't know any of the costs involved, however the Pet Passport requirements will be changing from January.  Where before they had to test the titres, and wait 6 months from the positive result (which meant the earliest you could bring a pup in was around 10 months old), from January they will just need to have their rabies vaccinations, and then be able to travel 21 days after the last one, so this means probably 4-5 months depending on when they can have their first one.

I'm sure others will be along with more information on the ins and outs of actually doing it.

Yes it will all change from January and become much easier and no doubt cheaper -you need to expect to pay the breeder for the extra time they keep a pup for the passport to become ready. When I imported the cost for passport, upkeep, collecting the dog (the journey) etc etc, not including pup, was around 2000 euro.

Let's hope for you the breeder speaks English and replies to your e-mails etc!

I'd hope it's better now than when I went to an overseas cat show in the late 80's. I tried to ask a French breeder about one of her her cats and she let forth an unintelligible rant, which translated for me was along the lines of: "Oh I don't want to speak to you, you are English! You English never buy any of our cats! You are so snobby, you think yours are better, and don't want ours!"

She had no idea we had quarantine laws...

I am in the process of searching for a puppy from europe. This is new to me- will be a new breed for me and also the first time I have imported, but I dont have a choice as there are none in the UK.

I have emailed a few breeders but seemed to have hit a stumbling block...the language!!! and am yet to receive a reply...though with the latest I did use google translate to write my email!

My plan will be to hopefully drive over there with a friend to pick the pup up, so on top of purchase price will factor in petrol and ferry/tunnel costs and also the cost of pet passport/rabies jabs etc and also the cost of the breeder keeping the pup for an extra 2/3 months.

Sorry to hijack but what are others ideas of reasonable costs for keeping the pup this extra time?

Also, those that have bought from abroad, how did you pay? Did you pay in cash but obviously in the countries currency or did you pay by other means?

I paid the breeder 5 Euros a day for the upkeep -which obviously wasn't just feeding but training and socialisation too. Paid in cash but we did go over 3 times in total, once when the pups were 10 weeks, once when a few months old, and once when he was ready to be collected, and paid some each time.(The first time we paid the full purchase price plus the pets passport fees, the other two times the upkeep.)

It will depend on individuals how early they're happy to give the rabies jab - but I believe it can be done at 8 weeks or so, so then just 21 days (3 weeks) to wait rather than months.  This will be from Jan 1st - we are yet to know if they will need worming but Defra will have to make an announcement on this.

As for payment - usually done in their currency.  I had to have a dog in kennels in France and I paid in Euros via Western Union - via credit card.  You need details of the person and they're very good at checking that you know them and it's not a scam but it's an easy and quick way of paying.

No rabies cannot be given before 3 months of age -as per the pets passport rules. Edited to say: pretty certain that is manufacturer's rules as well.

Can't be done until 12 weeks.

WIth my new pup to be fingers crossed he had his vaccination at 12 weeks, tested a month later and I'm awating results at the moment, I believe in Spain that they are taking a while for the results to come through.

With payment we've paid a bit a couple of months ago, meeting up with friends from Spain next month where we will pay a bit more then the rest will be pain on collection.

ok, I was trying to think back a couple of years - it's actually 12 weeks I think rather than '3 months' so not so long to wait - then 21 days

>it's actually 12 weeks I think rather than '3 months'

The Canigen (Virbac) rabes vaccine says 3 months not 12 weeks (it can be given earlier, from 4 weeks if necessary, but another must still be given at 3 months) as does the Nobivac (MSD Animal Health) rabies vaccine.
- By Goldmali Date 15.08.11 18:32 UTC
The rabies vaccine my dogs have been done with states 3 months -if given earlier two injections are needed as opposed to one and then you'd surely do the blood test 21 days after the second anyway so pointless.

Mmm of course from Jan 1st no need to test the blood... that's now not required :-)  I guess it depends on the manufacturer...  it's 21 days after the last vaccination
