How can I start to do this - my bitch is just over one year and until now has been allowed to go anywhere in the garden (always the grass), however after the grass almost being killed off we have laid some turf and fenced off the lawn in a bid to try and improve it...

We have a largish gravel area outside the door which is where I want her to go (the JRT goes there anyway) but she just won't, she holds it until I take her out for a walk or take her in the lane next to the house.
She did do 1 wee there a couple of days ago and it was followed by lots of praise but nothing since....she doesn't even go first thing in the morning?

Any tips on how I can encourage her?

Thanks

Difficult one this as some bitches will only seem to go on grass, could you place a small area of grass in the gravel to give her the idea and by the time that dies perhaps she will have got the message. You do not want her to start holding back as that way lays UI, perhaps you could take her out to some grass first thing so at least she is able to empty the stale urine from her bladder first thing.

I would agree with nova lay some grass on the area you want her to go on and also start using a word when she goes. Also take her out and do the same use a word as she wees so she bengs to associate the action with the word that may also help her in time to go where you want

Totally agree lay someturf on the gravel and maybe work down to a sprinkling of compost or soil and hopefully she'll get the idea. I look after dogs at home and we don't allow dogs on the grass area as there would be no grass left, but we have designated pee areas that use flags and gravel. The dogs get the idea very quickly especially as they have other dogs for reference as does your dog. Give it time.
