I need to rant and know you will understand!
Just went to park in a supermarket car park when I noticed a man coaxing his Irish Wolfhound to lie down in the small boot of his hatchback, admittedly he had just given it a drink but it was hot and panting. I slowed down and opened the window, he smiled, I said " You're not going to leave that dog in the car in this heat are you?" He said the windows are open( one was open about an inch) He was absolutely taken aback that I had had the nerve to challenge him and then I was called every name he could lay his tongue to, loads of obscenities topped off with "do gooder" etc etc.
Crossed road to go to bank and was almost run over by a bloke reversing without looking whilst on his phone- he was also none too pleased to be shouted at!

The man in the supermarket was in there about 20 minutes and came out with  trolley containing their cheap dog food.

When I got home I noticed my aerial was bent, must be a coincidence!! :(

When are people going to realise how hot it is for pets in this weather??  Animals deserve more educated owners.

I popped into a shop the other day and when I came back out my OH had gotten out of the car and taken the dogs over to some shade, it was too hot for them in the car without the breeze you get when driving.
There were a few other dogs in cars on their own, with the window down an inch, poor things

went into my local supermarket and asked them to tannoy this car reg and make of car as a dog was in the back of a car panting and windows where down about an inch sunroof open car parked in full sunlight, they where very good in the supermarket and tannoy message went out , 10 mins later another went out with the manager adding that they where about to call the police due to a dog in distress in the car and needed to get into the car now.
i walked back to the desk and a man was there saying he would never shop in the shop again and how dare they tannoy him and embarrass him about the dog being over hot in the car etc, the manager said we have got someone out there now with water for your poor dog and i hope you do not treat your children like that and i just had to give him a round of applause the guy was furious and stormed off leaving his shopping.

How about this for an idea? For all those ignorant and horrible dog owners out there who leave their dogs in a parked car with or without windows open an inch. I say they should be forced to wear a fur coat, synthetic of course and shoved in a sauna. As for the water they'd be gasping for i would gladly throw it on the hot coals for them! I'd go and do my shopping, have a coffee with some friends and maybe pop back in an hour or two, just to see how they're doing.
"What's the matter love, you don't look so well!"

What a good idea Zebedee. Don't forget once we get them out we could feed them a bowl of cheap & nasty food filled with junk :(

i suppose we just need to call the police each time and let them break a window which the owner will have to pay to repair, that would teach them

I think it's about time this sort of thing was dealt with more severely.

I've heard of people being charged - the one that always sticks in my mind was the guy whose newfies were left to roast, one died and I think the other one made it.  He was given a choice of a hefty fine or spending the same time in the car as the dogs - he chose the car, and was begging to be let out in very short order and so paid the fine.

We need publicised penalties and general signs also etc for this advertised in car parks etc - the message just isn't getting out there :-(

I'll be honest and hold my hands up and say I have left a dog in the car once without any windows open.

It was February and she has bad hips in the cold so I left her comfy and asleep on her blanket - I was going to the cash machine (about a 30 second walk but around the corner so out of sight) I returned under 3 minutes later to find a lady stood over my car banging on the windows to try and wake my ancient girl.  I got a stream of verbal abuse how didn't I know it was illegal to leave a dog in a vehicle without ventilation and she topped it off with "don't you know dogs die in hot cars" I didn't mean to laugh but it was under 4 degrees outside and there was still snow on the ground.

She asked if the dog was ok as it might have collapsed i opened it up and showed her my dog snoring away.  I was a little annoyed at first as it caught me off guard but afterwards i thought thank god someone would kick up a fuss if there was a dog in a state in a hot car.  The lady had never owned a pet but said she was an animal lover we had quite a nice chat in the end and she said she'd delete my licence plate and not report me to the police and RSPCA which is always a bonus.

I haven't left my dog in a car since but i would never leave them in a hot car - it sickens me at shows when you hear the announcements for people who should know better.  The dogs are always the first thing out the car and the last in at shows, i got air conditioning just for the dogs as well...... no wonder my OH thinks I'm sad

Leaving them in a car on a chilly day in february is not the same though - that's something i've certainly done and like you, I wouldn't open the windows as dobes don't do well with cold if they aren't charging around (and not even then for Remy with his alopecia!)!

It is reassuring to know someone will do something though, but it is common sense.  4 degrees in feb is just not the same as 20 degrees and upwards in the middle of summer!

yeah I completely agree.  Its at shows that it gets my back up the most.  At windsor they were naming and shaming over the tannoy - they had breed and car reg and were telling people to ask around your breed find them and send them back.  It was a good 28 degrees at windsor dog show and 3x dogs were left in cars despite constant tannoys.
I heard someone ranting about if they smash my windows I'll........ Sorry if that was my dog in there (which it wouldn't be) they could smash the windows and crush the car when they were finished just get my dog out un-harmed!

My OH's BC goes with him to all sites during the colder months, he sulks if he does not go.
In the warmer weather he stays with me in the office and sulks for England, he will not even look at Colin when he gets back.

If it should get warm when we are out then we have a crate in the back - Its a Ford 4X4 with a truckman top so smaoked glass windows which we open and leave the water bowl in the back with the crate door open.

We have never ever left them in with a shut window even at -7.  But we do see a lot of dogs in a very small space in direct sunshine. If I thought the dog was in trouble I would smash a window and take the consequences.

Mind you Ive alos seen kids in cars in direct sunshine, so people just do not always think. Its a sad reflection that dog lovers are thought of as doogooders, nah we just use common sense pity you cannot but that in Sainsbury's.

Well done you and the supermarket manager!!

Yesterday I was over in Chichester and had stopped at the local Sainsburys to get some cash, I got my pup out and walked her with me. The worrying thing was the large amount of people driving into the car park with dogs in the back!! It was a hot day over there, sun was out most of the day too..I have never seen so many people drive into a supermarket carpark with dogs in the rear..
