OK, my younger two children ages 10 and 6 now want to get started in showing.
For several years now they have been to handling with us, been to shows with us and have already taken a huge interest.
We mainly show our staffies but sometimes we do show the Bordeaux.
Now as a responsible parent and knowing the strength of my two breeds do not feel they are the best of breeds to start them off in showing.
Therefore me and my hubby are trying to find a suitable breed for them to have to show. No intention of getting into breeding this next breed, purely for showing and pet.
We have looked at the things we need the dog to be: short haired (kids have low show prep time) Small and handlable, good tempered with kids and other dogs vital, showy personality.
So far the one breed both the kids and me and hubby agree on is the smooth haired dachshund minature or standard. We have done some research and the main check is that the parents have good temprements.
So can any of you suggest another breed or does anyone know of any dachshund pups at the moment.

My children show GSPs ,a GWP, and beagles for someone else.(also a Min Pin but they are not easily handled.) Whippets are very popular if you do not want a coated breed, but another thought is the group of dog. If its a different group to your current breed you will be at Champ shows on different days

Thanks for hat, yeah we had though of that for champ shows. Dachshunds come under Hound group and the staffies Terrier. Still a pain though as some shows do Hound and Terrier, some other combinations. Think it owuld have to be Open shows for all of us, and Champ shows the Terrier day would have to be the day. Unless of course the children were doing better than us then we might just retire :-D

If you don't mind doing a bit of work on their coats, then border terriers might be good...same day as staffs? Failing that maybe a whippet...seem popular with juniors. Why not ask a few people if your children can gain experience in the ring with their dogs/with a few breeds & then decide?

The children want something that is smooth coated. We were thinking og something quite small too.
Thanks for the suggestions though. Are whippets timid?

How about a Manchester Terrier which would mean you would go on the same day to Ch shows. They are not numerically very great so more of a chance of a place at Ch shows, especially if you have a male. I guess this would also mean that puppies are harder to come by though. The ones I have known had wonderful temperaments and only need a wipe over and nail trim and into the ring!

Thanks for your suggestion. You are right they are hard to come by as they are not even listed on Champdogs :-(.
Mentioned it to hubby but he thought they were as tall/taller than a staff?
I love the pugs I must admit and also French Bulldogs. We do like boston terriers but think they would be too big.
Gosh this is hard, just want to make sure we get it right for all of us.
Think I might just give them a Bordeaux to take in :D (joke)

French bulldogs are bigger then Boston terriers. If anything boston terriers may be a little more hyper.
ttfn :)
