Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / She sleeps outside

Is it normal for her to sleep outside in her run all night, even when it's -2 or -3 and a sharp frost? She pulls her vetbed out of her kennel and sleeps under the stars. Isn't it a bit cold, I know I would be if I only a bit of thin fur to keep me warm. She's done this since about 14 weeks old, but it doesn't seem to have done her any harm.

Maybe there is something putting her off the kennel, a strange scent etc I get a hormonal spray from the vets to spray the catbox, it chills the cat out so she can travel. Perhaps there is something similar for dogs.

My wolfdog Lakota does this all the time Dave, she has the choice to sleep in or out and insists on sleeping in the middle of the garden on the wet grass with no shelter :)

HI Dave, I would have thought that if she was cold she would go in, but that said, maybe some scent is putting her off, like foxes pee or something?? But my spaniels are radiator huggers! Maybe a good scrub out with disinfectant will mask any odour in there and if she still sleeps out you at least know its her preference and not anything to do with the enclosed quarters. Get those marigolds on;) Julie:)

Well she sleeps in her kennel sometimes, especially if its raining (even though the run is covered). I even put a small tube heater in there when she was away training just so it was nice and cosy at night. But paradoxically, the colder it is, the more likely she is to sleep outside. Personally, I think she's just frightened she might miss something going on outside, not that there ever is, apart from the odd bird or squirrel :)

I reckon all these fancy things we have or do for our dogs are just designed to make US feel better. You know the stuff, pretty soft beds, brightly coloured toys etc. They're just as happy with a bit of sack and an old shoe :)

Dave

My two sleep out what ever the weather although tend to go in the kennel when it is really cold. But my akita likes nothing more than sleeping on the frost covered ground if we are at home. She gets too hot other wise. My 10 week old lab just cuddles into her when she is cold.

My two newfs will only sleep outside in the frost and rain and whatever the nasty weather brings , at first i was worried about them trying to get them inside but they are so happy outside and much cooler that now i just watch from my warm house, don't get me wrong they do have a choice to go in but they don't want to.
