Hows this for a nice story. My mother has just been in contact with a friend of hers who she has known since she was 16 the lady and my mother now being in their 80s  She has always  owned  and loved dogs but we didnt know until just now she has been having golden oldies to live out their lives with her in comfort feeling that a pup would be too much but never wanting to be without a dog.
I believe she goes to the same rescue who know her. It goes to show with the right circumstances people can still adopt and give a good life to an older dog when they are elderly themselves

That is nice and always think oldies are always well suited to oldie adopters :-)

Certainly has given me something for consideration in the distant (I hope ) future. One of her dogs was an ex  sniffer dog. The current one being a lab that had never been allowed indoors. She has successfully rehabilitated him and now he is happily curled up indoors with her and knows what a real home is.

It's the perfect solution for an older dog and an elderly person who misses a dog. I think (might have dreamt it, but sure I heard it somewhere) some rescues also help with medical treatments too as alas older dogs can come with bigger vet bills, but it's perfect, I always feel that it is unfair for someone elderly to have a pup as the pup is likely to outlive them and then what happens to it?

This way hopefully both will enjoy their last days together.

Carrington I believe you are right, there are rescues that will pay the vets bills if you take on an older rescue dog.  I would love to do this to let an older dog live out their life in comfort but I have to wait until my Akita is not with me as I think she would stress an old dog out!
