Jay,
It could have cost him that much money between the vet visits, the transport company or airline ticket, and adding up the quarantine costs of 6 months in a boarding kennel.
It does sound a bit exagerated unless he used a professional travel company who picked up, flew/accompanied the dog, and dropped it off at the kennels in UK, it could have concievably cost that much if added with the quarantine fees..
When I was checking before my Yorkie died, I was quoted $3500 to get her to Germany by a professional company located in Florida. Their fee would have involved picking up in New Jersey, putting her on a contract flight, then taking her off in Frankfurt. We'd pick her up there at the airport.
Hubby wondered if they were charging by the ounce, since she was only 7 pounds
This never happened, but at least I now know how much I can appreciate the military for 'allowing' us to pay $80 each for our two dogs to accompany us on the flight!!!
Checking with the German companies, it does seem to cost considerably less to fly our dogs back than American ones to come over this direction

regards,
toodles

Oh, according to some friends who did the 6 month quarantine stint, it cost them about 2000 pounds for their two dogs stay in the 'joint'. That was with a 'discount' for the two dogs together in the same run/kennel area.
