Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Introduction of puppy to intact male!

Hello again, as some of you will know from previous posts I have a 9 month old male Bullmastiff......he is a wonderful calm temperament and just wants to say hi......we introduced him to my mom and dads 8 year old intact rotty from a young age and they were fine.....the reason I ask advice is that my mom and dad live in a remote farm and Max the rotty is not socialised at all and is very much the typical guard dog....perfect with family but not at all happy with new people and new dogs......to cut a story short my parents were burgled when Max was young and the burglars beat him when he was a puppy ( 4 months old) and he has not been the same since....when Boscoe our bully started to grow and get bigger( now 7 stone) we have not socialised them since as we could see the signs of aggression from Max.....they also have a female cocker ( not spayed) a Sussex Spaniel (  neutered) and a male shitzu ( intact ) ......can we introduce them to get along? If so how do we do this.....neutral place etc.....we would love them to be able to play together.....

I am presuming that your pup is now much bigger than the 3 smaller breeds mentioned so they may be very wary of him because of that, I would have opted to introduce him to them first as a young pup rather than Max who had problems, you are going to have to take it slowly.

Yes neutral ground is best, one at a time starting with the female, 2 people taking them out for a walk will allow them to be together but in a controlled way and see how that goes and take it from there it may take a while to get each dog to be comfortable with him but never leave them unsupervised with him as they may gang up on him.

Hopefully others will be along who have actually been in this situation as I have only introduced dogs in the same breed to each other bar for introducing Rhuari my 9 week old dachsie to my 15.5yr old cocker and then the adult was much bigger than the pup.

Keep us posted on how things go
