could some1 give me a link or explane for me plz id be very much aprecated thanks....

il say what im looking for ,ok dam is black/white sire is choc ,litter mates were black/white blue roan and choc ,so does that mean pups will carry the choc and blue roan?
thanks asking for my friend x

I have a link here:
http://www.stirling-ecs.org/general/color_genes_c.html

Roan can't be carried, therefore to be a Roan one (or both) parent has to be Roan.
If the sire is chocolate, then yes - all pups will carry chocolate.

thanks Ms Temeraire :) ive looked and this should help lol put i just cant get my head round it all :( lol x

Sorry MsTemaire but that's not right - solid coloured Cockers can carry for roan and will produce roan pups if mated to a partner also carrying roan (or being that colour themselves). If the solid liver (chocolate) parent doesn't carry roan, all the pups will be solid (either black or some livers as long as the other parent also carries this colour) but if the solid liver parent does carry roan, then some pups could well be roan (either blue or possibly liver). Not that there is no certainty of liver/chocolate pups being produced - it's recessive and both parents have to carry it to produce it. "And white" is another possibility but as with other recessive patterns, both parents have to carry for this to be able to produce it.

o my its very confuseing heres a stab in the dark say a black cocker from the litter ive spoke about was to be mated with a sable would that mean there would be chocolate ..black...maybe sable pups plus roan pups??? im trying to get my head around this ,i bet ive got it all wrong havnt i LOL

>  - solid coloured Cockers can carry for roan

Thanks for clarifying that - the genetics sites I was looking at didn't make that clear.

Yes I think that's quite an old page. Cocker colour genetics can be quite complicated and often it's not possible to say what a particular mating will produce unless you know for sure what colours/patterns are being carried as recessives. Sable complicates things even further as it's not a traditional Cocker colour but has become quite popular with a handful of show breeders and sadly a lot of commercially minded breeders too who have jumped on the bandwagon :-( I don't think any breeder should be dabbling with sable unless they're very experienced and know the detailed background of the dogs they're using (not just trying to breed a colour because it's so-called "rare")

i agree 1000% with you jane my friend has used a sable boy with her girl the stud owner is well known and knows her dogs/lines i wasnt trying to go down that road :)

I need to look at some pictures of Sable cockers! I can imagine it could be a very attractive colour. I once saw a strikingly gorgeous working cocker that was deep red with black ears and tail (it had a tail!) - don't think it had a mask.

Dark sable isn't on the list of recognised colours for registration.

I don't know how it works in cockers but in other breeds, sables can be born very dark and get lighter later on.

Well if they have tan markings, they could be black & tans or possibly sable - either way, they're not black ;-) Didn't the stud dog owner offer to help identify the puppy colours?

Goodness JG, looking at the list is mind boggling how on earth do you decide what colour a puppy is? Suppose having a breed that is grey I find the multitude of colours amazing.

As a child we had Cockers and I only remember them being red, black, blue roan or red roan don't remember liver or tan at all.

yes she went to see the litter when thay was 4weeks old and said thay should of been sable reg but she (friend had already reg them ) ive seen them and the tan around their bums as lightend and light tan going up their legs, friend should of waited before reg them with kc :(
there is no tan on face or anywhere eles? x
- By white lilly [gb] Date 24.07.11 17:50 UTC
Jg i took it from this i found when reading the link.

Dark shaded sables tend to be very dark at birth and sometimes look like black and tans with the tan gone a bit awry. As they mature, the gold/red extends until the body coat is red and the jacket hairs are black tipped,

i got abit confused lol sorry :) x

The registrations can be altered to reflect the true colour, now if only I can find the KC page again.
