Topic Dog Boards / General / Shock collar fine
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 19.07.11 06:33 UTC
The first court case on the illegal use of a shock collar has finished, with a fine for the owner.

It just proves that these 'containment fences' don't work.

Sorry to be so dense but I was "shocked" by the title of this post! I thought it meant "shock collar OK".....I couldn't believe it, and obviously now having actually read the post I understand. However - is anyone else likely to be as daft as me??

S'cuse my ignorance but I didn't realise that electric fencing was also illegal. I thought it was just the collars that you zapped with the remote control.

I posted a thread a while ago about different types of fencing as I am (still) looking for a house with land and had considered electric fencing to keep the dogs in.  I don't recall anyone saying that this was illegal.  TBH, after researching I don't agree with the electric fencing as the side effects can be horrific but didn't think it came under the same legislation as the remote control collars.

I nearly put the link up last night after watching the BBC Wales news item - but I thought that maybe bringing up the subject would be frowned on after the thread the other day about discussing these things!  Now that you have done it JG I can comment ;-)   Did you watch it?  I thought that they gave an awful lot of airtime to the guy who spoke for the collars!  It gave him a lovely advert - although of course he could only use the collars when he goes over the bridge it was made clear.  Where was the advert for alternative training methods - in this case a decent fence around the garden!  The dog was on show and of course he looked fine - and they showed a bit of film of a dog chasing sheep and being shocked - it stopped chasing.  I can see the viewers thinking - what is all the fuss about, this works.  Although in Phil Pooks case it clearly didn't.

Any collar that gives an electric shock, whether by hand-held trigger or remote fence, is illegal in Wales.

The dog wore the collar that was triggered to give a shock when going past a barrier I believe> I didn't realise that electric fencing was also illegal  - anyway I don't believe that electric fencing around your garden is an option - this is in a normal street.

Yes I read it the same but seeing as JG was the poster assumed it was about somebody else who felt the use was fine!

It doesn't hurt passers by or other animals though, only the dog with the collar on - a lot of people probably wouldn't even realise it was there.

Horrid invention in any case, and I am glad he got the fine.  I just hope England, Scotland and NI get a shimmy on and follow Wales' example.

Fantastic, long may the fines continue, I too wish that the rest of the UK and Ireland would all come together and support the illegal use of these things, excellent news that the law has been acted upon.

This guy lives quite near where I live ( I don't know him! :) ) and I think that apart from the obvious, this case has done wonders to highlight the cruelty and illegality of the use of these collars.  I have been quite surprised at how many people aren't aware of the implications of their use and I can also believe that it could be possible that the guy in question didn't know that their use is illegal in Wales.  Following the publicity generated by this case, everyone in Wales should know.  :)

Thanks for clearing that up for me :-)
