Topic Dog Boards / General / Puppy lost a tooth!
- By PippaPuppy [gb] Date 16.07.11 18:04 UTC
Ahhhhh!

Pup has a chicken wing once a week, sometimes twice, but never more. She has been having them for a few weeks now but I think her tooth has come out from the chicken wing she had at lunch, her mouth was bleeding a bit but it's stopped now. Is this normal?? Will she grow another? Should I stop giving them to her until she has adult teeth?

Poor puppy :(

Thankyou in advance for your help!
Sarah

Perfectly normal. :-) How old is she - puppies start shedding their baby teeth from about 14 weeks of age or so.

We feed our dogs raw meaty bones, this pup is the first we have had that was fed raw from we got her and I can honestly said she has been the easiest teether.  All teeth were shed invisibly and has had no bother what so ever.  Previous pups have had teeth hanging by a thread and double canines.  Not sure raw makes a difference but we have certainly noticed this.

She is 18 weeks old so just in the bracket it seems, THANK HEAVENS!

I felt so sorry for her but she didn't seem bothered. Gave her a bit of milk with her water to wash out the blood taste and she's happy as larry. She didn't chew her toys with the part of her mouth where the tooth came out for a couple of hours but that doesn't surprise me. I'll sort out a frozen kong for next time, now that I know what it is but wasn't sure earlier so panicked a bit!

Will the rest of her teeth fall out in a short period ie two-ish weeks or a month or so...?

They're usually all out by 6 months or so.

Do you remember losing your own baby teeth? It's just the same, apart from the tooth fairy paying for them!

I can't really remember but at least I know now that she is of age for it to be happening to her.
Thanks for your help everyone :)

Another tip - I gave pup frozen carrots when he was teething (the sort you buy allready frozen).

My bullie left a very macabre scene through the house when he was teething and often left them stuck in his chew toys...eeeewwwww........he did also break off a canine about half way down but after a few weeks it fell out promptly followed by a healthy new canine !!  From my limited experience I would say perfectly normal.....

That made me smile - she was eating a raw chicken wing at the time and I expect she enjoyed the taste :-)

Yeah it was bleeding for quite a while after; I think she must've bashed the gum where the tooth came out as it was about an hour after the chicken wing that she started bleeding, hence the milk and water.

She's lost another today but didn't see any signs of blood. Phew!
I will try the frozen carrot idea, that's a good one. Gonna freeze some vegetable soup in her kong tonight for tomorrow. :)
