Topic Dog Boards / Health / Swollen foot now spreading up leg
- By Cani1 [gb] Date 12.07.11 21:42 UTC
One of my puppy buyers was on the phone earlier very upset. Their dog who is 2 years old and giant breed last night had a slightly red pad , they are the best dog owners , really caring for their dogs well . When they got up this morning his foot was all swollen and he was limping quite badly , by this afternoon his leg was starting to swell as well.
They booked a vets appointment and the vet has advised that he is kept in overnight and tomorrow to be put on high dose of AB's and painkillers , he is already on the max dose of steroids for a problem with his jaw which has almost cleared now.

Just wondering if anyone had any ideas what could of caused this swelling. The vet said it might be just one of those things  , she couldn't see right into his pad as it was too tight and swollen , she said she doubts a grass seed could cause this to happen so quickly.

My mind has been running away with me , thinking what it could be , they walk him around a rugby field and they are living in a new build house where most of the estate is still a building site. Do you think the building materials could have anything to do with this?
They have another small dog who is always in good health but last week had quite a bad infection which spread all down the outside of his chest , they said puss was oozing from it , he is fine now , he was put on AB's and they have worked. Could this be just coincidence ?

Strangely one of my puppy owners, almost 2 year old dog had their dog showing signs of swollen legs and became quite ill it now looks as though it was the start of bloat as he had a lot of fluid and gas in his stomach.  Not that I want to worry you but swollen legs isn't how I expected bloat to start!

Thanks Merlot , never thought of a snake bite . I'll mention this to them.

Perrodeagua I can't believe you mentioned bloat as I saw the dog just last week and he is awfully bloated. Although he is on a high dose of steroids which they have put this change down to. Although I have no experience of bloat , I always thought it was something that came on really quickly as you don't have much time to act , before the dog dies , I may very well be wrong though ! :)
I'll also mention this to the couple , I am now worried sick as I had a missed call from them earlier and I can't get an answer now , so I'm thinking bad thoughts and feeling really sick . I do hope he is alright. I've thought of ringing the vets myself but I know they won't be able to tell me anything as I'm not his owner.

Althouth I believe the vets haven't used the word bloat I would think it is something very similar.  My friends dog had been a bit off colour for a few days and had swollen limbs.  They did blood tests all fine then opened him up to find him full of gas and liquid in his stomach.

At this time of the year, possibly a grass spear head?  They go in the foot and work their way up the leg, causing swelling on their way, often coming out at the elbow.

He's back from the vets , but they are non the further forward , they only spoke to a nurse when collecting him.
He has an opening on the top of his foot about 1inch by 1/2 an inch and all they have given is anti inflammatries and hibiscrub. They are going to call and speak with the vet in the morning to find out what's gone on , as when they took him in he didn't have a cut or tear of any kind.
I don't think they'll get any sleep tonight as he hates the hood and is wanting to get to his foot .

They took him back to the vets today and had a good chat with the vet who was looking after him , he has cellulosis . While they were there they had to cut away some of the dead skin and they have been told to keep bathing and getting as much puss :( out as possible. They have also prescribed him tramadol , I didn't know dogs could take this , so I've learned something else today !

Did they mean cellulitus ? Of so oh has just recovered from
this also in his leg it takes ages and needs high long doses of ab s. Of this they diagnosis make sure they go back to the vet immediately if it contiues further up his leg. Oh had no pus to remove or dead skin but some peeling when it had got better. Hope pup recovers soon

My dog peg has just had this,(it really hasn''t been pegs year) it was just after she had teeth out and we kept her in for a while ,so she went a bit mad on her first walk out, chased mr rabbit slipped on the wet grass got up kept running.I caught up with her and she held her leg up but wasn't too bothered, until I got up the next morning to find massivly swollen paw,I have never seen anything like it.straight to vets with antibiotics and anti inflammatories, luckily it did not get to the abcess stage, which vet was so worried about.
It took almost two weeks to go down completely, and also peg is on long term steroids,I do not know if this has a connection or not,the vet did not say,but I wonder as you have said this dog is on steroids aswell.
I really hope all goes well,
Ash

I double checked because my first thought was cellulitus , but they are sure the vet told them cellulosis , I'm not sure what difference there is as I've never had any exp of it.

ashlee , I'm pleased Peg is better now , it does make you wonder if there is a connection , I will ask them to mention it to the vet on their next visit.

. No I am not sure what the vet meant by cellulosis I googled it and nothing came up but whatever lets hope the vet has ahandle on it and he has a successful recovery.
Cancell that I have found references to cellulosis and description is similar to what you describe it si deiffeerent to cellulitis, as I said whatever recovery is the most important
