Its me again with a couple of problems sorry I mean areas to develop !
First the dreaded house traing Brooke is 16 weeks now and house training at home seems to be ok but only if I take her out each time and  point her to the right place if not or its not me it is still pretty random even with the back door open she has clearly not got the idea for the outside is the right place better still on the dogs patch although O know form experience that bit comes later.
2 days a week she is at my sisters house also doggie people with their own gsd. When she is there it is totally haphazard they take her out stay with her for ages then she comes in and wees and poos. Again when I arrive I take her out and whoosh ! usually a wee.
I have suggested they always make sure that their dog is inside when on a wee trip take atreat and walk down the garden with her to give her the command which is what I do any other suggestions or is it me being embarassed and impatient ?
Problem 2 THE CAR
She travells well except would like to be on my lap but after afew minutes settles down

but getting in the car is a different matter. She refuses point blank and sits down or pulls in the opposite direction sometimes  evn seeing where we are going. It doesnt matter which car I have tried a number of different ones or where she travels in the car its the getting in. we can walk around the car but as soon as she realises she is getting in the breaks go on
To my knowledge nothing has happened no bumps or caught tails or fur.
I have tried putting the other dogsin first and giving her treats or throwing them in the car but no even thoose arnt working.
At this rate I shall be carrying a full growm flat coat into the car    !
any suggestions please

Yes, and that's pretty much as it should be :)  Some dogs take ages to understand an open door so I'd just forget that idea for now, and continue to go outside with her.  I have a 10 month pup and two adults and I still go outside with them all if I need to be sure they do something - I'm their reminder!!

Don't attempt to take responsibility for her housetraining at your sisters.  When she is there, they need to take control and accept that if she messes inside then it's their responsibility.  Two houses might be slowing the training down a bit so you really them to be on the ball too.  Suggest you, and they, keep a pee diary which might help remind you all of her timings.  I agree, they should leave their dog inside until Brooke has finished.  Her reward might then be a playtime with their dog when he comes out.

Where does Brooke sit in the car?  She shouldn't be able to get to your lap and a crate is safer.  Crates also stop them moving too much in the car which can be a contributing factor to fear or sickness.  I'd just gently persist with this one - refusal isn't really an option and it's unlikely to continue into adulthood.  Although I still have to heave my 31kg 'pup' in the car.  He gets his front end up then waits for me to do the rest!

Truthfully it all sounds fine but I suspect you worry because you have to take her to your sisters - incidentally is that when she has car trouble?  Is she the same on the way there and on the way back?

FF i think Merlin and Brooke are communicating somehow, i can echo ALL your problems (sorry thats no help is it lol) however last Thursday Merlin randomly decided he could jump in the van??? no warning/coaxing/instruction, i opened the cage, ready to pick him up but he beat me to it and leapt in lol .

I think we forget how long the housetraining takes you know... :) :) We were hindered having a winter pup and if it rained - forget it no way was Bentley peeing in the rain!!!

So continue with what you are doing - and just keep rewarding when she gets it right :)  It does get there - think Bentley was over 6 m when I realised he had sussed to go outside and not just pee random places!

With the car - I too would suggest she is crated to travel - does she have a crate for her bed at home?  If she is really unhappy about the car getting in then perhaps just going to the car and sitting in the back not going anywhere might help?  She may feel more secure in a crate too?

Is it only to your sisters she goes or other walks too?  Usually they suss that if the trip means going for a walk they suss it's not so bad?  I can't help too much with the car as haven't had a bad traveller sorry - hope you get it sorted though.

And I think more pictures on FB please :)

Thanks dogs a babe that is reassuring> I am not worried at home  and now i shall gently reinforce what I have suggested to them. Its only another two weeks as I am then off work for the summer so she will be with me Hopefully by next term she will be further forward.
Dont worry she cant get on my lap that was a joke, if she could spend all her time glued too me she would be happiest
It doesnt make any difference which car mine, my oh, my sisters or friends. You are right about a crate but I am having problems this time as I have a honda jaxzz  now and untill oh jib changed and he has his car away with him I used the big estate for the dogs.  My car is much smaller andthe best place is in the boot and a full adult crate wont fit so investigating a barjo dog guard and tailgate but still worried if there is enough room. With the seats up its no problem except then she could be tempted to climb in the front which I wont have (dangerous) but that can only be when there are no passengers. Sister has a volvo and a discovery so she is in the back there. It isnt when she is in the car once in she relaxes and sleeps until we stop its the getting in. It doesnt seem to matter if she is going anywhere or coming back either

Will try sitting in the car I quess she will just sit outside it as far away as her lead will let her Rachael yep she is crated indoors. Its anytime we need to go in the car walks or whatever so nice things at the other end. When she arrives at my sisters she cant wait to get in to the house to play so its not where she is going. I am beginning to wonder if soneone gave her an accidental bang on the head or caught her fur in the door :(   It really is getting through the doorway that problem seems to be. O yes photos I am so cackhanded with photos but will try hope to meet sometime in the summer and may give richmond a try sheis just about old enough ( thats scary)
yep claire it does actually at least I am not alone maybe now merlin will have a word with her and she will jump in the car when we go out today

Oh Richmond :) :) we will be there so hope you will too!!  Will you be able to do any opens first :) or is she just old enough at Richmond?

Re: the car - its a baffle - so slowly get her near the car and so on - are you using a clicker for any training as this is where the clicker could come into its own?  By each time she makes a small step click/reward?

Try looking on ebay or agilitynet marketplace as these are fab for picking up second hand guards/tailgates or car cages!  I recently got a harbon for a 1/4 of the brand new price!

forgot about ebay silly me thats where I got my crates from over the years doh ! It is abffle as you say:) everthing else she takes in her stride, well she general doesnt particularly like wearing a collar and lead she seems abit sensitive around her neck. However no problem when we are training.

I was considering a harness but I dont really like them the steering is kinda wrong . Headcollars are fine imo but only if lead walking not good. ie my Whispa

I shall try some fun shows where age doesnt matter but she is only one day old enough for richmond  :) so cant do much before but hey ho if we look like idiots for a bit who cares as long as its fun
Be great to see you their and sue too:)

House training just takes time and we forget how long. I would let the people who live in the house work on it with her rather than you assume control, maybe she is bonding strongly with you?

Re the car, I would feed her in the car, sit with her, make it a place where she goes as she knows she is going to get something nice, it will take time, the neighbours will think that you are totally ga ga ( if they don't already!) lol!
Good luck

yep your right they do ! I will give these ideas a try mind anone fancy feeding their doog raw chicken on the loof of the car yuk !a

furriefriends - have a look at a soft crate for the car.  They're obviously not crash resistant but would give the sense of enclosure you might need and they'll probably squish a bit to fit in your boot or could be anchored on the back seat

I have a dog guard and tailgate guard for my old Rav 4 that I bought on eBay for less than £8 the pair - the tailgate was 99p!!  Better than the £230 I've just paid for a new tailgate guard for our new model Avensis!!

Next time we buy an old car my oh says we should find a cheap Barjo first then choose the car to fit :)

It doesn't sound as if she has a problem with being in the car or the journey itself, so perhaps she is objecting to the act of getting in? Maybe the car wobbles when she jumps in or if you lift her in it is uncomfortable? Try changing the way you get her into the car?
- By furriefriends Date 08.07.11 12:11 UTC
Thank you shiv will have think. dont think its the wobbles as I have tried in the back of my car as the seats fold up and gives loads of room and she only has to step up about 6 ins and its all cars  She comes out ok. Even with whispa in the car first it makes no difference. She just looks at any car that she my be getting into and sits down and anchors herself to the floor. Everything else she seems so far to take in her stride Cars arnt a problem perse.
Well I will ahev to get out there in the car and see what I can do
Soft crate hadnt thought of that until I can afford a barjo or similar that maybe an idea
