If your serious about research once you have joined the breed club try to buy at least 10 years Worth of back breed annuals/yearbooks (thats about 3 canine generations), and after you have researched all the dogs behind the pedigrees your working with that far go back further buy buying even more, at least the last 20 years to give you five or 6 generations..

This will allow you to see how individual lines/kennels have developed and how particular dogs have bred on, and what influence they have had for good or otherwise.

It doesn't beat hands on or personal experience of the dogs but it gives you a snapshot of the breeding over time, and a foundation for more research.

I now have yearbooks going back to the 1930's with almost complete set back to the 70's.

The thing is where do i find a good club for my girl?

I have tryed a few but they are not the real clubs.

Wow do you know how much all these annuals cost?

It would be nice to see how it all got started and see which breeders are still going.

Thanks for that

I don't know your breed, but there should be a breed club affiliated to the Kennel Club. You could search their web site or just ask.It is extremely interesting and rewarding to research your breed. With my breed they were relatively unknown until the mid 60's so it has been easy to follow the lines in both the U.K and the USA - in the USA there has been notably one mainstart in the breed(with some controversy)It has only been since the late 90's onwards that the population has increased and the BRS makes some worrying reading of late.In my breed there have been a couple of great books, one written by one of the earlier breeders that have great pictures, 5 gen pedigrees and a write up on some off the earlier dogs.It even describes her experiences of whelping.Theremay be something similar in your breed.

Congrats on the confirmed pups, not long to wait now.

I have borrowed those annuals going back to the 60s after staying with someone who left them for my bed time reading, addictive once you get started.

Hi Rhodach,

Aww bless you, thats kind of you to say.

Oh right i see, I bet you have enjoyed reading all the information,  if your in to some thing i think you never give up looking for things that you are in to.

I wonder if amazon would have any thing like that on there? Might give it a try!

Thanks again

Every breed has a breed club, just Google or search eh Kennel Club website in the breed info area.

Breed clubs produce annual publications and usually print more than they need.  also when people die or go out of a breed they will often donate the old yearbooks that are a history of the breed to the club for selling for club funds.

When you join the breed club you usually get the current years annual with your membership plus newsletters etc.

You will be told when there are breed events going on such as seminars as well as the shows/Trials.

Anyone breeding really should belong to a breed club, but the majority of breed club members are simply owners.
