Do all male dogs cock their leg to wee? My friends dog is 11 months and still squats, is this normal. I have only had bitches before.

Most do, but not all, especially if they were castrated young.
Some male dogs never learn to cock their leg, especially once they've been castrated. I had one who lived to the age of 15 without ever cocking his leg (castrated at just over a year old).
Is he neutered or entire, and does he attempt to mark?
My entire boys will squat for a proper wee (the 'I've been indoors for a few hours and I really need to go' type of wee) and will cock their legs for marking or quick wee's. Sometimes leg cocking is associated with confidence
My neutered dog does a combi style squat with one leg left out behind although he'll sometimes lift it a couple of inches

One of my neutered dogs was 3 before he started to cock his leg.

My dog is 13 months and is still only sometimes cocking his leg but mainly prefers to squat if he needs a good wee, hes still a bit wobbley when needing to stand a while! Hes entire and has only been cocking his leg on and off for the last couple of months and only now is it increasing in frequency but not by a lot.

My dog is nearly 4 years old, he's entire and has only ever cocked his leg twice. He doesn't really squat, more like he stands withhis back end dipped a little bit. If he's marking he sometimes tilts his pevlis a bit to get some direction on the flow!
My JR cross started cocking his leg at 11 weeks!!!

Find the boys will pee horse style if they need to empty but cock when marking, the marking procedure happens when the dogs hormones kick in and if the pup have been castrated young they may never do so, OK with a short coat and can be a bit messy if the coat is long as they are not designed to squat properly and manage to pee up their chest and front legs.

my bitch cocks her leg, or at least holds one leg out sideways while weeing
i think she wishes she were a boy
> my bitch cocks her leg,
Very common with alpha type girls.

My nearly 6 year old dog very rarely cocks his leg - girlie squats is his position of preference :-) He will cock his leg if he is marking where another dog has been but it's a very half hearted attempt and he rarely bothers to cock his leg if marking over the top of my other dogs scent.
I actually prefer him to squat as it means he tends to go in the one place in the garden rather than cocking his leg up anything and everything. A friend's dog cocked his leg up my leg a few weeks ago :-O

Its very often a learned behaviour as well as a confidence thing... my boy would only squat when he first came to me but after walking with some other leg cockers and gaining in confidence of a stable home he started to cock alot more... he will still mostly squat in the garden but will mark when out and about to let others know hes there.
My girl is the boss in our pack and she has been known to cock her leg if she can manage it! LOL! :D

my eldest and 'team leader' :) when out on occasion will put her leg on a tree and pee and she also scrapes the floor to flick it just that little bit higher..

All my bitches have cocked their legs and will "mark"

Yep my pomx bitch will always cock her leg to wee I think she is trying to keep her skirts dry lol My castrated male does some of each and he was castrated at 10 months ( earlier than I would have liked but the advice at the time was do it now as he onlyhas one testicle)

My 6yo squats and sometimes might very slightly lift a leg but rarely - think he can't be bothered ! He is very laid back except when it comes to finding rabbits and birds!
He only has one testicle ! whether that is an influence or not?
When my BC cocks his leg my CS will often have a look and get peed on. So a squats fine here, they tend to do it as they feel, the CS cocks more than sqats but BC squats more than cocks - both 4 both castrated.

Both boys castrated & will do both, have been watching them since you posted and ours are the same, pee like a horse to empty & cock when marking. Otto does find it difficult to balance on three legs, but Lucas always lifts his leg when we are out and about.

My 14th month old male has only starting cocking his leg at 12 mths. He mostly does that now but does still squat :)
Trouble is now he does it when the girls are having a wee and it normally ends up over their backs :(

LOL.....this thread is making Me laugh....! :)
Ive lost track again of how many Collies I have.....just kept two puppies from the 13...(Love Ya Lotts) Leo-Miller...and Gem 106 Radio Star....but have to admit that peeing can become a bit of a "Free for All"...what with full on cocking from My Girls....Flicking grass and twigs and Mud...behind them when they've been....taller dogs nipping in and peeing on anothers head...and then nipping out again pronto....All of them marking where the pups have been.....peeing in the Water Bowl seems to be a favourite with one of the boys at the moment....thereby ensuring that we have to refill the Water Bucket....which attracts the 4 Water Dog Goddesses (Lotts...Little Tess...Meg...and now Gem 106...!)....like moths round a flame...!
Think its all pretty normal...! :)
What breed of dog is it? Bigger can be slower to mature, also hip issues need taking into account, 1of my collies has hip issues and doesn't really cock his leg. My other male nearly falls over and I don't believe it's an alpha thing either just him full stop as he's insecure and that's more likely at bottom(ho ho) of it. A castrated male can take years to learn the behaviour.

And I have a female who cocks her leg.

I have several.
