Topic Dog Boards / Health / 6 week old puppy with flaky skin
- By Pedlee Date 06.07.11 07:20 UTC
My litter (med/large gundog breed) is coming up to 6 weeks and all are progressing well. But I noticed one has got quite severe flaky skin on his underside chest area. He isn't itchy or sore and none of the others have it. I mentioned it to the Vet on Monday when I went in for something unrelated and he was stumped. To me it looks like the cradle cap babies get. Has anyone encountered anything like this?

He does have a home lined up, but that was before I discovered this problem.

It could well be cradle cap :-)  I have had this or what sounds like it on pups before, usually around the 4/5week mark, a bathe in mild soapy water softens the flake and a gentle grooming with a fine tooth comb removes the dead skin. IF it is this, then it should be gone within a couple of days.  the others probably had it around the 4/5week mark and you never noticed.

Think this is a normal thing, well it is with something like a black Newfie, expect all pups do shed their birth skin but in some colours it may not usually be noticed.

He is pale in colour and it was only on close examination I discovered it. Will give him a mild soapy bath and see how we go. This litter is certainly keeping me on my toes!
