Would like a bit of advice please:) i have a maiden dog but my bitch has had one litter. She is on day 11 standing & definitely up for it! he is interested but not mounting her, as he hasn't been used before would he know when it is the right time? thanks

I have got a litter from the exact same type of mating at the moment. The dog mated the bitch for 4 days and those 4 days only, he obviously knew exactly what was right despite it being his first time. We even got a bigger litter than I ever had expected.

Has the dog been told off for getting sexy around the house and with human's? If so, this could be a reason for the current situation!

Hi Goldmali, that's encouraging thanks, also did you leave them together obviously under supervision or apart?
- By Littlebear [gb] Date 29.06.11 10:18 UTC
Hi ce1985f, no quiet the opposite, he has never been like that around the house or with humans!

Just asked a friend about this who is very experienced in breeding dogs and many other animals and he said:-

Get someone else to gee him up by hand. Some dogs won't perform if owner is nearby and need to be hand started! Shutting them alone in the bathroom together can help, as some don't like a audience, especially if they've been told off before for 'humping' something.

Always under supervision in case they tied and tried to pull apart -but that did mean most of the days together as they are with me a lot.

I have had bitches visiting my friends Male at my house (she has other males, and I don't), and they are always simply together while I am home and can watch them, this way they get to know and trust each other and relax, and mating happens when both are ready and happy.

I have also had stud dogs come to stay with me to mate my own bitches, with the same procedure.

I do split them up if I go out, as many bitches find the tie very irksome (some so much so that they will twist and roll over in an attempt to get away), which could result in injury to dog or bitch.

Eeeepp indeed!! Yes having someone other than the dog's owner to do the mating (not sure about the hand bit!!!!) might help, but not leaving them unsupervised.

I agree in not leaving them alone as things can go wrong so quickly.

She may not be ready despite how she is behaving, keep putting them together several times a day.

Sometimes removing him or her from the room can make him focus more but only if she is ready.

I would never leave them alone together, she seems to be ready by the way she is behaving, but not much interest from him? I just hope i get a mating! surely he would know when to mate? she is not the problem it is him!!

Many studs won't waste their energy unless it is the right time which is what you want.

Thank you to everyone for your help and advice :)  will let you know what happens.

I hope that no novices see that bit of advice and think it is ok to do this.

>surely he would know when to mate?

I would never take that for granted with a maiden boy.  Not all dogs are sexy to be honest!

And, even if she is showing signs of interest, bitches will often tease before thay are actually ovulating.
