Topic Dog Boards / Health / Droopy eye on an old Goldie
- By Pinky Date 25.06.11 20:49 UTC
My near 13 yr old goldie has got her droopy eye again, it's her left one, it's happened before but went away without treatment.

The lower eye lid has dropped down and her eye ball looks as though it's looking up into the top of her eye socket.

There's no soreness and she seems happy in her soppy waggy tailed sort of way she's still eating and keen for walks.

Any ideas as to what it might be and why it's happened again.

It sounds like Bell's Palsy, which is surprisingly common in Golden Retrievers.

What was your vets impression?

Cd be Bell's Palsy but quite often this happens due to some other reason. Maybe having slight strokes?  I'd be taking to vets myself for a proper diagnosis.

We had a Golden many years ago with a similar eye problem.
My vet thought it was a small stroke she had and she also tilted her slightly.
When she blinked it was almost like a chicken blinking...the eye ball seemed to roll if that makes sense.

Sounds very much like Horner's Syndrome which can be common in Goldens.
I have had it once with a bitch who when it came back to normal never had again.

I was going to say Horners syndrome,  as I have it.  Didn't know it could go back to normal though.

I must be honest and say that we didn't take her to the vets last time which was about 2 years ago, after just a week it all tightended up again and was OK.

This time it seems to be lasting a bit longer in 3 days it will be 2 weeks.

I think perhaps a vet visit is on the cards this time.

She has no head tilting and everything else about her seems fine considering her age

Most definitely, and after 2 weeks, sooner rather than later.  You really do want a diagnosis here.

My Goldie has developed this or similar symtoms.  hers is a blocked duct (can't remeber the other name for it).  Try cleaning the gunk out the corners every day with an eye treatment or coliodial silver.  The first week i also used an eye cream from the chemist.  Her eye goes back to normal now.

She can wake up with it and a clean sorts it out.  Hope nothing more serious.

Went to the vets this evening having made the appointment 2 days ago, felt a bit silly as it's all but gone, he checked her over said all seemed fine but thought her eye looked a bit sticky/sore, washed it out and gave her anti bio's.

She's still her silly old self so hopefully all is OK.

No need to feel silly - better safe than sorry!

Very pleased that the vet has checked her over for you, and hope she does well on the AB's.  :-)
